[on Bonnie and Clyde (1967)] I thought that if were going to show this (violence), we should SHOW it. We should show what it looks like when somebody gets shot. TV coverage of Vietnam was every bit, perhaps even more, bloody than what we were showing on film.

[on Portlandia (2011)] Even if the show is divisive, that to me is a more interesting kind of art to make than something that people never talk about or think about.

I always felt like such an outsider, always existing on the periphery, and I am really grateful for that. Starting from a place of normalcy or mainstream, you don’t get the same gumption or drive that you do from the fringes.

Look, I like people very much. I’m not very good with people, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like them. I do like them. Sofia Milos recurred as mob boss, Annalisa Zucca, who goes toe-to-toe with Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini). With this role she showed that she possesses the ability to be strong and powerful, while still remaining feminine and vulnerable and it’s these kind of performances for which she won an Artistic Achievement Award in 2010 in Banff and a Hellenic Times Award, in 2009 in NYC.

[asked in 2003 interview whether he was born in 1947 or 1951] 1951. I have it on my passport and driving license. [I said 1947 in my autobiography] because I just wanted to maintain a constant lie. I was born in 1951 but see what a great thing it is, because everybody asks me? And I can keep it up–I can tell you I was born in 1952. Names and ages piss me off. So I just continually lie.

In the early 1980s, I got into a war with my management – they just kept on suing me and I lost everything. So I had to go out on tour to make sure the electricity stayed on.
