I worked so much in my 20s and I really burnt the candle at both ends. I wasn’t too picky about what I did and I was lucky that I did some really good films, but I also did some really rubbish films, I think part of the downside about being so successful and winning the Oscar at the age of 26 is that I sort of became insouciant about the things that I chose. I thought, “Oh, I’ll just try this, it’ll be fun or I’ll do that for the money”. Things like that now I would absolutely never do.

I’m always puzzled by this talk about star… image. I think there’s people who are writers or barbers or mechanics or race car drivers that have certain recognizable personalities, and I don’t think just because they happen to be on the screen that it makes them any more exceptional.

Head injuries from a motorcycle crash in late 2011 were followed by increasingly bizarre behavior culminating in arrests in 2012, additional head injuries in jail, misdiagnosis as “psychotic with chemical dependency,” despite never testing positive for drugs that year and never having any previous criminal history.
