Happy Birthday: Philip Kaufman

Born: October 23, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois, USA

[on Ashley Judd’s character driving a jet black Mustang in Twisted (2004)] That’s a direct homage to Bullitt (1968). And we looked a lot at Steve McQueen. In a way we wanted to have a woman character with the kind of energy that Steve McQueen had. Even though Steve McQueen was a huge star in his day, my feeling is that he was underrated. Now that Steve McQueen’s gone, we miss him. I don’t know of anybody who has that kind of kinetic energy that he brought to bear in movies like that.[2004]

I come from a very musical family. My dad taught me to play guitar. I play violin and drums as well. Violin, I started in elementary school. Drums actually came when I was in a program called ‘Rock Star,’ which was really awesome. We were doing a song by the Ramones, so I thought, ‘Why not play the drums?’

I think you look like a fool as a director when you talk too much about what the actors are doing. You want them to listen to you, but personally speaking, I don’t want them to just follow everything I say without processing it. This is a problem for Asian actors. They are so polite, and they’ve been trained to smile and nod and agree with everything someone in power tells them. I’m not looking for conflict, but I’m not happy if someone is repressing their feelings either.

Happy Birthday: Sam Raimi

I love the Spider-Man character. And that’s what’s at the heart of it. That’s why I really love it. But there’s another fun thing that I never had before where you make your movie and a lot of people see it and they seem to like it. So it’s like oh my god, I’ve always been the nerd, lame ass guy on the side, but I made something that a lot of people like. I know that won’t last for long, and I’m obviously riding the Spider-Man thing. He’s a popular character for 40 years. So anyone who makes a Spider-Man movie gets to make a popular movie. But it’s fun to be popular, even if it’s a brief, lame thing, and even though I know it’s not important. I can’t help it. It’s really fun and I know how quickly things turn in Hollywood.

I’m often asked, “What is your favorite moment during the 30 years you hosted [“The Tonight Show”]?” I really don’t have just one. The times I enjoyed the most were the spontaneous, unplanned segments that just happened, like Ed Ames’ infamous “Tomahawk Toss” that produced one of the longest laughs in television history. When these lucky moments happen, you just go with them and enjoy the experience and high of the moment.

[asked why he didn’t keep the controversial edge that his predecessor Jack Paar has brought to The Tonight Show] I think that shows that have gone in just for controversy, to bring on two people of opposing view is very easy night after night. It’s easier to that kind of show then it is to get laughs.
