I don’t know how the music video generation can affect the movie business, but I’m curious what feature films the English Chris Cunningham and the Swedish guy Jonas Åkerlund are going to make.

[2012, on landing Back to the Future (1985)] I was shooting a film in Mexico City that I’m not sure ever came out. But it was shooting in Mexico City, and I was kind of implanted there, focusing on that, when my agent sent me the script for Back to the Future (1985). I scanned it, but I wasn’t terribly impressed, mostly because I’d been offered the chance to go back East and do a play at the Long Wharf Theater in New Haven. I’d be playing Hans Christian Andersen – I grew up with Danny Kaye. And Colleen Dewhurst, an amazing, wonderful actress, was going to be my mother in it, and I just thought, “I need to go back to my roots.” So I just dismissed the Back to the Future (1985) script. And then a friend who was with me at the time said, “My mantra has always been to never leave any stone unturned.” In other words, whenever someone has an interest in you, whatever it is, at least check it out. So based on that, I flew back to Los Angeles, met Bob Zemeckis, and the rest is history.

I got good grades in school, but I was in a little school and a small town out of Pittsburgh, not academically demanding or ambitious, I don’t know how much that says but I was not that science thrilled I was more in to playing sports, jazz, painting and acting, stuff like that, but recently because of playing these parts I’ve gotten more interested in science, my dad was a doctor, and I’m reading this Carl Sagan book that makes science, see the way he talks about it is very aliquot, makes it seems kind of human kind of romantic and wondrous, spirituals, sexy vermeil, its very attractive book that he just wrote.

I have no sense of myself as a sex symbol at all. But the meaning of sex symbol might be a little different in Japan to elsewhere. The Japanese version seems to come with a stronger emphasis on a sort of grownup or mature male charm. And if that’s the case, then I guess I’m happy to hear it.

Each director is different. Clint Eastwood and Chris Nolan are completely different, and I need to adjust to the story and character and the director and just my duty as an actor.
