Happy Birthday: Chuck Lorre

The reason I changed my name was simple. My mother, never a fan of my father’s family, had an unfortunate habit of using Levine as a stinging insult. When displeased with me, she would often say/shriek, “You know what you are? You’re a Levine! A no good, rotten Levine!” So, for as far back as I can remember, every time I heard my last name I would experience acute feelings of low self-esteem. ….. My first wife was the one who suggested I change my name to remedy the situation. In fact, it was she who came up with the name Lorre, complete with the fancy spelling. I thought it sounded great. Chuck Lorre. Finally a name that did not make me squirm. It didn’t occur to me that in England my new name translated into Chuck Truck. But most interestingly, I had completely forgotten that when I was around eight years old my father’s business began to fail, forcing my mother to find work in a clothing store called… Lorie’s. Pretty creepy, huh? Did I abandon my father’s name only to unconsciously name myself after a place associated with my mother’s abandonment of me? Or, even creepier, did my ex-wife somehow know all this and propose the name Lorre just to screw with me? Hmmm… I was a no good, rotten husband so I certainly had it coming.

[from a 1973 Rolling Stone article] Back in the fifties. I was an early fifties Jesus freak. I did it for about a year. I never spoke when I wasn’t supposed to speak. I was an acolyte in the order of the Christian Brothers. Yeah, yeah, I know — the Friends of the Winos. But I took it very seriously at the time. I pursued, you know, God, somewhat unsuccessfully for several years as a professional religious person, and then I forsook that life and took myself back to the world, and, through a series of incredibly stupid errors, became an actor. And after many hard, bitter years of struggle, I’ve achieved the immense fame I have now. Wealth. Happiness. Beautiful women throwing themselves at me. Believe me, it’s not at all it’s cracked up to be. Ahead of me, I can see only more stardom, with liberal does of obscurity.

[when asked for suggestions on how to judge acting] I have three tests. First, which dominates, the character or the actor? With very few exceptions it should be the character. Second, on film – as opposed to stage – we’re pretty much playing basic emotions: love, anger, fear, pity. So the trick is whether you can come up with any fresh choices to present these common emotions. Third – and this is the quality that separates the great ones from the good ones – I look for a “joy of performing” quality. Who had that quality? As much as anyone, Jimmy Cagney [James Cagney].

[on approaches to acting] ‘The Method’ is in the air. The actor is defending himself from the Philistine, vulgar public. I had a girl in ‘After the Fall’ I couldn’t hear. I kept on saying, ‘I can’t hear you’. She finally got furious and said to me, in effect, that she was acting the truth, and that she was not going to prostitute herself to the audience. That was the living end.
[on working in radio with Orson Welles]: I was amazed at Welles’s genius with the microphone; he seemed to climb into it, his word-carving voice winding into one’s brain. No actor had such intimacy and sheer presence in a loudspeaker.
