[on Gail Davis] There are lots of girls who can ride and shoot and lots who can act, but the girl who could do both just couldn’t be found. Then this kid came along and I didn’t have any more problems. A whole generation of children grew up with Gail Davis playing Annie Oakley on television. Before that she co-starred with me in several of my movies. She also toured with me on a number of occasions. Gail was an extremely talented individual. She had a kind, generous heart and brought so much joy to so many children. She never stopped doing that right up to the day she passed away.

Died Today (October 2nd): Rock Hudson (1925–1985)

Born: November 17, 1925 in Winnetka, Illinois, USA
Died: October 2, 1985 (age 59) in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA

His legal name was Roy Fitzgerald. When meeting John F. Kennedy, the American president remarked: “They say all Fitzgeralds are related”, to which Hudson replied, “I guess that would make Ella happy”.

I also remember meeting Gary Cooper at a party. I was so impressed that I blurted out that all the stars I had met before had been terrific people. Cooper thought about it for a minute, then said, “Yes, I suppose we are, the ones who are on top. But watch out for the ones who haven’t quite made it, or are past it.” It was valuable advice.

Happy Birthday: Terence Winter

terencewinter.jpgTerence Winter

Born: October 2, 1960 in Brooklyn, New York, USA

[ The Sopranos (1999)] I watched eighteen different versions of the last scene of the series finale. All very subtle variations on each other, but that was so painstaking, shot by shot, and it took David [Chase] weeks I think to put that ending together. I thought it was great. What I always took away from it was: when you’re Tony Soprano, even going out for ice cream with your family is going to be fraught with paranoia, and whether a guy comes out of the bathroom that night, eventually somebody’s going to come out of the bathroom somewhere. Maybe it happened that night, maybe it didn’t. But his legacy is paranoia and just that horrible distance that he lives in. I was shocked that people were so angry. It upset David that people would think, Oh, he’s trying to fuck with us.

[on Charles Chaplin] The greatest compliment I ever got was from Chaplin. He came up to me and said, “I wish I could talk like you on the screen”. I said, “I think you’re doing alright”. He had made $50 million by that point. He was the best comedian we ever had.

I don’t belong to a church or political party or a group of any kind. I feel that Amnesty International is the most civilized organization in history. Its currency is the written word. Its weapon is the letter; that’s why I am a member. I believe in its non-violence; I believe in its effectiveness. Its dignity and its sense of commitment. Its focus on individuals and the concentration and tenacity with which they defend those imprisoned for their ideas has earned it the cautious respect of repressive governments throughout the world.

[on the induction of The Police into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame] I am very proud of the legacy of The Police. We are a damn good band and it still holds up.

Happy Birthday: Samantha Barks

Born: October 2, 1990 in Isle of Man, UK

It’s your job that should inspire you; fame is just a by-product of something that should give you satisfaction and happiness. Someone said that for every three seconds of glamour you see, there are eight hours of hard work. And if those eight hours of hard work aren’t what you’re in it for, then the three seconds won’t give you the joy that you think it will.
