Happy Birthday: Adelaide Clemens

Born: November 30, 1989 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

I remember vividly one distinct memory of arriving in Hong Kong and being the only blonde haired girl in this sea of international students, and thinking, ‘Oh, my God. There’s no hiding here.’

I live in L.A. and I do have wonderful friends; I moved there when I was 19 so I developed a close knit group of friends, none of whom are actors, none of which are Australian, but I couldn’t do it long term.

In a photo shoot, you have to be very comfortable in your own skin. It’s all about confidence-boosting and putting on armor.

Happy Birthday: Emmanuel Lubezki

The first man to win for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography three years in a row, for his work on Gravity (2013), Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014) and The Revenant (2015). He is the seventh individual to win a three-peat in any Oscar category. He is the first cinematographer in history to win three Academy Awards in a row.

[on Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)] I didn’t want to make a gimmicky film for no reason or just to do it in one take to show off. But Alejandro’s script had the seed of the idea in it and was perfectly written, it reads like one continuous take, where you go into the madness of Riggan Thomson [Michael Keaton] and the collapse of his life. So it did make sense. I…

I feel really good about Quantum of Solace (2008). The issue which we always had at the time, and still bugs me, [was] we never had a completed script. It was the writers’ strike and so… we could’ve gotten longer, deeper but at the same time I’m really pleased with the movie. (…) But at the time, the main thing for me – what I was missing – or wished that we’d had… six months without the writers’ strike, to develop the script properly, get certain sub-plots a little deeper and stronger. (…) I haven’t seen the movie since, so I have to see how it’s aged. It would be interesting to re-watch it. [2015]

[on Charles Bronson] I don’t think reviews get to Charlie much, though, unless they’re especially personal. In the twenty-five years or so I’ve known him, he’s not changed much. He’s his own man. Stays pretty much to himself. If he cares what other people think of him, he doesn’t show it.

[on working with Matt Dillon on “The Flamingo Kid”] I wasn’t sure if I was going to encounter a teen idol or a professional, but I’m happy to report that Matt is a professional. He’s very dedicated, very conscientious. He is very concerned about being a good actor and I think he’s going to be around for a long time.

[on what it takes to be a provocateur] I never think I’m creating anything controversial, and I’m always surprised when it is. I’ll admit, when I first started and was doing “Nip/Tuck,” I was really trying to sort of make a statement about hedonism and narcissism and sexuality, and I spent half my day fighting battles on that show. I had huge standards problems, and I’d have big fights with [FX’s] John Landgraf, whom I love now, and Peter Liguori. Now I never fight… I’m less interested in shocking now. Being emotional is more interesting to me. It’s funny because I don’t get as many standards notes as I used to. I guess what I’m interested in is what has become much more personal to me and thus much…

[on the box office failure of The Golden Compass]: The Golden Compass became a bad experience because the studio didn’t have faith in the strength of the ideas of the novel, which is ironic because it’s one of the greatest fantasy novels ever written, if not the greatest, and they took the religion out of it and tried to turn it into a popcorn movie. We had an inferior product, which was trying to avoid anything with any religious content in it, which emasculated the film. I think there were some very unwise decisions that led to its financial ruin here, and in turn, to the destruction of New Line as we knew it.
