[after being rejected for the femme fatale role in Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) at age 39] I’d never felt more sexy and more confident as a woman, and more ready as an actress. Yet, as I quickly discovered, if you were over 35, you weren’t any of those things as far as Hollywood is concerned.

Every year, I resolve to take good care of myself and stay in shape.

And I strongly believe people should rescue dogs, or, at the very least, listen to Bob Barker and have your pet spayed or neutered.

Oh, I wish I could tell you I was a Mr. Fix-It, but I am not that kind of guy. I get frustrated so easily.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ has given me a lot of security, especially as my kids have grown older. Plus, for the last eight years, I didn’t have to get on a plane and go to do a job out of town or in another part of the world.

[to interviewers] Just call me a nice, clean-cut Mongolian boy.

Girls have an unfair advantage over boys: If they can’t get what they want by being smart, they can get it by being dumb.

[Message recorded in January 1985, after he was diagnosed with lung cancer] Now that I’m gone, I tell you: Don’t smoke, whatever you do, just don’t smoke. If I could take back that smoking, we wouldn’t be talking about any cancer. I’m convinced of that.

I’m not of the can-kicking, shovel-carrying, ear-scratching, torn T-shirt school of acting. There are very few real men in the movies these days. Yet being a real man is the most important quality an actor can offer on the screen.
[on his character Chris Adams from The Magnificent Seven (1960) and Return of the Seven (1966)] Well… He’s just a dirty bum. There are only two things clean about him: His gun and his soul.

Happy Birthday: Stephen Lang

[on reasons for his role in White Irish Drinkers (2010)]: One, I really liked the title, that’s how shallow I am. But the main reason was, I was afraid of it. You kind of heave a sigh and go, “Oh God, I’m going to have to go there?”.

Acting can be a very reactive profession. Acting is a fantastic thing, and it’s my life, but writing is also part of me too, so I did it and in so doing took responsibility for my own life. And it was very directly and specifically because of “Beyond Glory” that Jim Cameron cast me in Avatar (2009). And Avatar is responsible for the good fortune I’ve had over the last few years.

…My dad had gone to Swarthmore. He is New York Jewish and my mom is New York Irish Catholic. You put them together and you get me. I consider myself quite ethnically Jewish, without being particularly religious (laughs). Although, I can leave that door open for the future, if I need it.

Happy Birthday: Rachael Taylor

Transformers (2007) was important and defining for me because it taught me about what kinds of movies I want to make and the kind of actor I want to be, and I have a long way to go before I become that actor.

The earth is such a voluminous, sparse, wild place that has its own rhythm that human beings try to control and strategize our way around, but the truth is, if you’re out someplace like the ocean on a capsized boat, it doesn’t matter if you have academic degrees, or if you’re a martial-arts ninja. Nature is a bigger force than you.

Sometimes when Australians go overseas, it’s as though the “Aussie” is refined out of them. I don’t know why. It’s never happened to me, because I’m really proud of it. I’m not embarrassed about where I’m from or who I am any more. I know who I am. I don’t fit in everywhere, but I know where I do fit in.
When you are in control of what the final product is, there is kind of no limitation to what you feel like you can do because you know that if you don’t like it, you can just cut it out.

I didn’t want to find out the reality that if I wanted my dream, I had to lose weight. That’s a crushing dream for anybody . . . to change yourself to get your dream. Nobody should have to do that.

[about modeling] One of the hardest things is the weight factor issue. I’ve never heard of a size 0 or a negative human. That’s hard. A lot of girls aren’t naturally built that way. Also, the lack of having an opinion is the main difficulty. I was always like, “How about we try this?” or “Let’s do that.” I sort of got the look, “Shut up, model. We pay you for your face, not your mind.”

[getting her first love letter] I got some really cute fan mail from an 11-year-old boy, who told me I’m “prettier than a rainbow,” which is, like, the sweetest thing any boy has ever said to me. Maybe when he grows up, he’ll be able to read this story–and if he is reading this now and he is 11, then, hey, you shouldn’t be reading Maxim!

[on needing to reshoot their torture scene in Marathon Man (1976) because Method actor Dustin Hoffman had gotten excessively drunk the first time so he’d look really out of it] Oh, why doesn’t he just *act*?

[on Marlon Brando] Brando acted with an empathy and an instinctual understanding that not even the greatest technical performers could possibly match.

[on Marilyn Monroe] Look at that face – she could be five years old.

People ask me why I’m playing in this picture. The answer is simple. Money, dear boy. I’m like a vintage wine. You have to drink me quickly before I turn sour. I’m almost used up now and I can feel the end coming. That’s why I’m taking money now. I’ve got nothing to leave my family but the money I can make from films. Nothing is beneath me if it pays well. I’ve earned the right to damn well grab whatever I can in the time I’ve got left.

[In 1983] If you’re 75, which I am, it’s damned hard to find parts. Lear is the only star part for an old man that I know of – I’ve never heard of a good play about Methusaleh. I played the title role only once before the Old Vic. I was 39. When you’re younger, Lear doesn’t feel real. When you get to my age, you ‘are’ Lear in every nerve of your body.

In Julius Caesar, I died early in the scene and used to fall asleep under the shield until I was waken up by applause. I didn’t have any lines, other than “The Queen!” or “Ah, my Lord!” for four years. — RR, commenting on his first few years as a bit actor with the Royal Shakespeare Company

[on Barbra Streisand] I thought she was not very attractive at first. But gradually she cast her spell over me. I fell madly in love with her talent. The feeling was mutual for four months – the time it took to shoot the movie.
[on his prowess as a lover] See these hands? They are old. But they are soft. Only good for caressing.

[on Che! (1969)] I wasn’t satisfied with it. It was very awful because it was a movie about a very important figure in socialism and communism, and it was produced by the CIA. I didn’t know and I wasn’t aware of that. I had put a condition with them that this movie wouldn’t offend the reputation of Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara.

[on being cast by David Lean in Lawrence of Arabia (1962)] They chose me for Lawrence of Arabia (1962) because I spoke English, had black hair, black eyes and a mustache. It was all luck. I was taken in a plane to the desert to meet David, and as we came in to land we could see him sitting all by himself. We landed right next to him, but he didn’t move one step. When I got off the plane, he didn’t say ‘hello’. He simply walked round me to see my profile. Finally, he said “That’s very good, Omar. Let’s go to the make-up tent.” I tried on a mustache, and it was decided I would grow one. I’ve shaved it off for a couple of films, but otherwise I’ve had it ever since.
