QUOTES:

[on her arrest for protesting the demolition of Los Angeles’ South Central garden] I’m not thrilled about it, but I felt it was important to sustain my commitment.

I feel like I’m about 7. I always get shocked when I look in the mirror and see a grown-up.

I was a daydreamer when I was a child and I still am. I like fantasy a lot. It would be great if I could always play mythological characters.

[on addressing the skepticism of climate-change deniers] I make a concerted effort to do conservative media. People go, “Oh no, don’t do that. They’ll eat you alive.” But I don’t care; that’s what I need to do. I need to reach those people and at least give them the opportunity to listen to the information. I really believe if people have information, they will make wise decisions.

QUOTES:

I pray every night. I just talk to God and I can go to sleep. I don’t worry anymore.

I love… anything in black and white

It creeped me out at first, but I guess it’s nice to know I still resonate in people’s minds. – about being recognized on her subway commute to work

They spoil you rotten. If you want a glass of milk, they run off to get you one. – about being on a movie set as a child actor

I really don’t like to do back-to-back movies. I concentrate on things at home. My family and school life are important to me. I try to do one movie a year.

QUOTES:

Every hotel room, every apartment we rent, I am sage-ing. And I have crystals that I travel with. It just makes me feel better.

I would say I was always very ambitious and goal-oriented, but rather than being just a go-getter hustler, now I surrender a lot more and I trust my path a lot more.

I’m a huge karaoke fan. Oh my God. I’m one of those girls who don’t give the mic away. It’s a problem. I’m a closeted pop star.

I really like to act, and I really like to perform. I enjoy producing as well.

I always like Madonna; any Madonna song is good for me.

I had danced with Janet Jackson and P. Diddy so I had done a bunch of hip hop. Really and truly my roots are in modern and ballet but, professionally, that’s not really out there any more, unfortunately, so these artists aren’t really having a lot of ballet dancers behind them so I had to learn hip hop really quick.

I really didn’t know how people were going to react to ‘Magic Mike’ because there hasn’t been a movie like it.
There’s a reason women are pregnant for nine months; by the end, you’re ready to have this baby.

QUOTES:

[about the birth of her son, Cal Freundlich, and being a mother] It is the most wonderful experience of your life. It deepens absolutely everything. You have a greater understanding of things, so in a way it is a gift. For me it has made everything much better. I’m so happy; I am extremely fortunate.

I hesitate to call things companion pieces or to draw comparison between films because I think you reduce the films by doing that.

It’s true, the classic, iconic American ideal, that heroine, our idea of perfection is this blonde woman in a blue dress and a blue car.

That’s the beauty of what actors do, that you only have yourself as a resource. And so the trick is to find something in them that you connect to somewhere. And with every single one of my characters, I have to find something that I really understand and ultimately believe.

My parents were very liberal. That’s a misconception about the military. I’m a proud army brat. I love the military. It breaks my heart what this war [the Iraq war] has done to it. These back-door, draftlike returns of soldiers to the front – you don’t do that. You don’t send a soldier back three or four times. That’s not OK.

When someone says, “I’m not political”, I feel like what they’re saying is, “I only care about myself. In my bathtub. Me and my bathtub is what I care about”.

There’s always a female audience. But we will only go if they make movies for us because we’re just too busy. It makes me crazy when people ask why women don’t go to the movies. Number one, there are no movies for us and, number two, we have jobs and families. I never get out of the house with two little kids. If I go, I want to know it really is something for me. I want it to be relevant to me.

The great disappointment is that when you’re acting, you’ve literally become a different person in your head, and when you see it you go, Oh! It’s the same face! You feel sometimes so limited by your physiognomy. You are desperately trying to look different, but it doesn’t always work. There are some things that you can change, but unfortunately you’re always left with the same face.

QUOTES:

[on Mamma Mia! (2008)] I had never seen the stage show. When I first heard about the audition, I was like, “Damn, I’m not Greek!”. I thought it was about this big Greek family.

I do feel like I’ve grown up. Living by yourself in two cities, having a relationship, the Hollywood stuff. It forces you to deal with things as an adult.

I just love to act and be on the set. I want to make acting my life and get really good roles.

I’m not really into clubbing, I like to go to parties after events, and those do end up at clubs or bars. But in my free time, I go grocery shopping or to the gym, or I talk on the phone.

At 11, I had a crush on Leonardo DiCaprio. Actually, it was not a crush. It was an obsession! I was also obsessed with Richard Dean Anderson, from MacGyver (1985) and Indiana Jones.

I have jeans with holes in them and I have nice jeans. I have casual and I have dressy jeans. I’ve got all kinds.
[on playing the lead role in Mamma Mia! (2008)] It doesn’t really get better than this. I’m afraid I’m going to just have to beg Meryl [Meryl Streep] to do another movie with me. She’s so in touch with herself. I know that comes with age, but I’m really excited to figure out who I am.

Get to know the filmmaker:

What motivated you to make this film?
I was inspired by Romeo and Juliet one day while listening to the soundtrack from the movie, I started to see this film come to life in my mind. I always loved the reading the play when I was younger… and so I began writing a tragic love story and soon I had a script.

What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
I was very nervous how it would be received. But I was overjoyed to see that people understood our creative vision and enjoyed the film.
