Happy Birthday: Humphrey Bogart(1899-1957). Born Dec. 25th

Born
December 25, 1899 · New York City, New York, USA

Died
January 14, 1957 · Los Angeles, California, USA (esophageal cancer)

Birth name
Humphrey DeForest Bogart

Spouses
Lauren Bacall (May 21, 1945 – January 14, 1957) (his death, 2 children)
Mayo Methot (August 21, 1938 – May 10, 1945) (divorced)
Mary Philips (April 3, 1928 – August 11, 1938) (divorced)
Helen Menken (May 20, 1926 – November 18, 1927) (divorced)

QUOTES:

[on Lauren Bacall] “She’s a real Joe. You’ll fall in love with her like everybody else.”

[attributed last words] “I should never have switched from scotch to martinis.”

[on the House Un-American Activities Committee] “They’ll nail anyone who ever scratched his ass during the National Anthem.”

I came out here with one suit and everybody said I looked like a bum. Twenty years later Marlon Brando came out with only a sweatshirt and the town drooled over him. That shows how much Hollywood has progressed.

A hotdog at the ballpark is better than a steak at the Ritz.

When the heavy, full of crime and bitterness, grabs his wounds and talks about death and taxes in a husky voice, the audience is his and his alone.

[about himself] “Democrat in politics, Episcopalian by upbringing, dissenter by disposition.”

I can’t say I ever loved my mother, I admired her.

I don’t approve of the John Waynes and the Gary Coopers saying ‘Shucks, I ain’t no actor — I’m just a bridge builder or a gas station attendant.’ If they aren’t actors, what the hell are they getting paid for? I have respect for my profession. I worked hard at it.

Turning 46 Today: Jeremy Strong. Happy Birthday

Born

Spouse
Emma Wall (August 1, 2016 – present) (3 children)

[on transitioning from stage to television] Most of my heroes had started out in the theater, so I was always doing plays, and I think initially it was just an escape and also a transcendent freedom that I discovered on the stage that I didn’t feel anywhere else in my life. The transition into film took longer than I wanted, but I am grateful for the years of hardship that I went through because they allowed me to connect with characters, in terms of adversity, in a way that I wouldn’t have otherwise if things had happened more easily for me.

Turning 39 Today: Perdita Weeks. Happy Birthday

Born
December 25, 1985 · Cardiff, Wales, UK

Birth name
Perdita Rose Annunziata Weeks

QUOTES:

I like my name, but I do share it with a lot of dogs and cats.

Basically, less is more when it comes to film.

I don’t think acting’s difficult. It’s not like learning to walk on your hands.

It takes one heck of a lot of energy to be an actor-director – a rather terrifying prospect but a challenge I would definitely relish in the future, given the chance.

People on sets can be unbearably wasteful in general.

My name is synonymous with corsets and ringlets.

It’s good for an actor to have, well, a big gob.

Following America’s lead, I think British TV is fantastic.

Turning 75 Today: Sissy Spacek. Happy Birthday

Watch the best of films now by signing up for the FREE 7 Day trial. New Festival Daily: https://www.wildsound.ca/todays-film-festival/

Born
December 25, 1949 · Quitman, Texas, USA

Birth name
Mary Elizabeth Spacek

Spouse
Jack Fisk (April 12, 1974 – present) (2 children)

QUOTES:

[on her daughter Schuyler Fisk becoming an actress] The business has been good to me. I would be a hypocrite if I tried to convince her not to do this.

[Parade magazine, April 1, 2001] I had a dozen years to act before starting a family then found that motherhood dwarfed everything else. Once or twice a year, I take a project that appeals to me for its redeeming social value.

[on why she did not want to appear in The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999)] I asked if they could use some backflashes instead. I enjoyed the sequel, but hated my role in the first film. I was awful.

My cousin, Rip Torn, persuaded me not to change my name. You shouldn’t change what you are in the search for success.
