Fear of heights, cockroaches or dark. Fear can differ; some fears are minor, while others can be big. And when you overcome them, you feel more substantial than you were as you understand they were only panic inside your head and nothing else. And you just needed a bit of courage to win over them. But what if some phobias are so real that they might kill you and the species if you don’t crush them? Maybe such fears are those you don’t mess with to save your life. This poetry can sometimes become a nightmare in reality. Is the option in our hands to choose?

What motivated you to make this film?
Without getting into too much detail, I basically saw that I had an opportunity to work with a director to create my vision of a black-and-white, silent, horror, film, and I approached him with it and luckily, he agreed to work with me on it. I always wanted to make a silent horror film that would’ve been like the first slasher film ever made but also like a lost film from the 30s that we’re just discovering nowadays. And I wanted it to be violent, but also fitting with the times and I knew I had the chance to use a lot of great sets and I have an eye for buying the right pieces for the costumes and props. Basically this was in my head for years and I saw the opportunity to work with the right director to get this done.
What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
I was actually pleasantly impressed and excited by how much they seem to like the story and the acting, which was my doing. But I’m glad they also talked a lot about the cinematography which was my director’s doing. We made a good team and this film never would’ve been made if it wasn’t for both of us bringing our talents to it. I am always thrilled to learn when an audience likes our film as that is what it’s made for… Entertainment!

The team was super communicative and helpful. It was really beneficial to get an amazing feedback video!
The communication team of the festival did a marvellous job. They not only ensured that each stage of the festival was well updated with the film makers but also took their extended support in getting audience feedback, which is certainly a good gesture any film maker can offer.
I made the film “Trans” knowing it would probably not be well accepted but it HAD to be made. Thank you so much for including our film. What you do is amazing and tireless. Everyone should support your efforts.

A young happy couple are attacked by a vampire. Soon, the young woman transforms into a monster. Will true love prevail?
Review by Julie Sheppard:
Vampires At Night, a spellbinding Canadian short, depicts love’s triumph despite the “hands of evil”. It effectively presents itself in the style of a pre-talk film, with elegant, framed titles, glitchy moments, and the decision to shoot in black and white. The tone is both dreamy and nightmarish, as the happy couple attempts to celebrate their love with frolicking musicians and luscious candy apples, until the stalking of a terrifying ghoul.
There was spectacular use of ghostly white eye contacts and huge menacing teeth for the vampires. The camera was well-utilized in a multitude of ways, with such elements as extreme close ups, overlays, animation and cutaway imagery. The soundtrack was suitably haunting, notably clanging piano and jarring percussion. The movements of the cast were rather ethereal and trancelike, which worked for the melodramatic style of the piece.
Another memorable thematic choice was the use of masked, robed figures presenting an unsettling choreography that seemed mirror the lead’s terror and confusion. Fortunately, some relief is provided — as the narrative suggests, despite evil’s grasp, love can indeed triumph and remain forever.
