Today’s Podcast: EP. 1586: Filmmaker Heloísa Cardoso (SUBMERGED)

A young woman waits for her lover for a secret trip. However, he does not show up and does not respond to her messages. That’s when strange and inexplicable events begin to happen in her house. She asks for help from her lover, who ignores her. Realizing that she is hopelessly alone, she gives up waiting for salvation and surrenders to her own shadow.

Director Statement

“Submerged” is my graduation film from Academia Internacional de Cinema. This short film is an extension of the research I’ve been developing in theatre and literature, proposing a reflection on the tendency to wait, something encouraged in girls from a very young age. The wait for a great love, a hope for something external that will give life meaning. The horror surrounding this waiting evokes the idea of a monstrous femininity: when left alone, the protagonist of “Submerged” unconsciously materializes her shadow, which ultimately consumes her and breaks the cycle of passivity.

I grew up in Chicago, so I’ve always been a Bears fan. Dad used to take me to Bears games and Cubs games. My brother used to ride me over to Lake Forest College on his Honda Supersport and we’d watch the Bears practice. I remember those guys out there as monsters – they were the biggest things I’ve ever seen!

There’s a joke in my family that I’m going to make a career out of playing other people’s younger selves, I played the younger Keira [Keira Knightley], I’ve played the younger Angelina [Angelina Jolie] and more recently the young Margot Robbie.

DOCUMENTARY SHORT FILMS• 12m

“Peace in my Night” is a compelling documentary that follows the extraordinary life of Elsie Mascher, a woman whose unwavering faith in God guided her through the darkest chapters of World War II.

As a young child, Elsie witnessed the horrors of war firsthand, enduring the unimaginable as her family were forced into labor on their own farm. Eventually taking the chance to flee, Elsie and her family embarked on a frightening journey to freedom.

Their arrival in Canada brought new opportunities and it was there that Elsie found love, meeting her husband and embarking on a new chapter of life to East Africa.

Featuring intimate interviews, archival footage, and glimpses of who she is today, “Peace in my Night” offers a deeply personal and moving portrait of a woman whose faith carried her through the darkest of times. As Elsie Mascher reflects on her experiences and shares the wisdom gained from a life lived with purpose and determination, her story serves as a testament to the enduring power of faith, resilience, and peace.

Directed by Abigail Mascher

Died Today: Robert Redford (1936-2025)

  • As a director, I wouldn’t like me as an actor. As an actor, I wouldn’t like me as a director.
  • I am perhaps the best-looking grandfather around, apart from Marlon Brando, of course!
  • Some people have analysis. I have Utah.
  • [on refusing the role of Benjamin Braddock in The Graduate (1967), the role that made Dustin Hoffman a star seven years before Redford obtained super-star status himself] I never did look like a 21-year-old just out of college who’d never been laid.

THE BARMY HORDE, 60min,. UK
Directed by Calvin O’Neill
Do you like silly little cartoons, but are too OLD and HAIRY to watch them without feelings of shame and fear that you are some kind of MENTALLY STUNTED BABY PERSON? Well, you are in for a right treat mate! Because these cartoons are SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED for hairy, mentally stunted freaks like yourself. It’s animated, it’s absurd, and it’s complete anarchy; a showcase of comical cartoons centered around a peculiar town named Barmy, based on the combined inspiration of Calvin O’Neill’s childhood entertainment and his experiences growing up in Croydon. Culminating in a multi-media collection of goofy characters and storylines that transport you into the wacky world of The Barmy Horde. So yeah…swing by, if that’s something you’re interested in.
