John Howard Davies was not a very human person … if you made a mistake of any kind, any sort of pause in speech, he would treat you rather as if he was a schoolmaster.

[Chapman and the other members of the Monty Python group traveled to visit the site of Dachau concentration camp in Germany, but were told by staff that they were too late and the museum was about to close] Tell them we’re Jewish.

I’m a victim of my own insides. There was a time when I wanted to know everything. It used to make me very unhappy, all that feeling. I just didn’t know what to do with it. But now I’ve learned to make that feeling work for me. I’m full of emotion and I want a release, and if you’re on stage and if it’s really working and you’ve got the audience with you, it’s a oneness you feel.

[on Mia Farrow] Trying to describe Mia is like trying to describe dust in a shaft of sunlight. There are all those particles. Her conversation is clotted.

[in 1968, on his career] . . . totally isolated, really suffocating. As a child, I was always lied to about myself and about the world.

Died Today (October 2nd): Gene Autry

Born: September 29, 1907 in Near Tioga, Texas, USA
Died: October 2, 1998 (age 91) in Studio City, Los Angeles, California, USA

Married to: Jackie Autry (19 July 1981 – 2 October 1998) (his death)
Ina Mae Spivey (1 April 1932 – 20 May 1980) (her death)

[on Gail Davis] There are lots of girls who can ride and shoot and lots who can act, but the girl who could do both just couldn’t be found. Then this kid came along and I didn’t have any more problems. A whole generation of children grew up with Gail Davis playing Annie Oakley on television. Before that she co-starred with me in several of my movies. She also toured with me on a number of occasions. Gail was an extremely talented individual. She had a kind, generous heart and brought so much joy to so many children. She never stopped doing that right up to the day she passed away.

Died Today (October 2nd): Rock Hudson (1925–1985)

Born: November 17, 1925 in Winnetka, Illinois, USA
Died: October 2, 1985 (age 59) in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA

His legal name was Roy Fitzgerald. When meeting John F. Kennedy, the American president remarked: “They say all Fitzgeralds are related”, to which Hudson replied, “I guess that would make Ella happy”.

I also remember meeting Gary Cooper at a party. I was so impressed that I blurted out that all the stars I had met before had been terrific people. Cooper thought about it for a minute, then said, “Yes, I suppose we are, the ones who are on top. But watch out for the ones who haven’t quite made it, or are past it.” It was valuable advice.

[on ‘Duck Soup’] It was the only time I can remember that I worried about turning in a bad performance. The trouble was not with the script, the director, or the falls I had to take. The trouble was Adolf Hitler. His speeches were being rebroadcast in America. Somebody had a radio on the set, and twice we suspended shooting to listen to him scream.

Died Today (September 28th): Eric Fleming (1925–1966)

ericfleming.jpg Eric Fleming (1925–1966)

Born: July 4, 1925 in Santa Paula, California, USA

Died: September 28, 1966 (age 41) in Tingo Maria area, Peru

Drowned while filming a TV scene in Peru at age 41.

During Fleming’s enlistment in the Seabees in 1942, his face was shattered when a 200-pound block of steel slipped from a hoist. A long convalescence and four plastic surgical procedures created the face familiar to Rawhide (1959) viewers.

Fleming was unmarried and had no children. He was to have married long-time companion Lynne Garber within two days of his death.

His mother’s maiden name was Anderson.

Died Today (September 28th): Elia Kazan (1909–2003)

eliakazan.jpgElia Kazan (1909–2003)

Born: September 7, 1909 in Constantinople, Ottoman Empire [now Istanbul, Turkey]
Died: September 28, 2003 (age 94) in Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA

His selection for an Honorary Oscar angered many in the filmmaking community on account of his being among the first to cooperate with the House UnAmerican Activities Committee in 1952, which led to the blacklisting that ruined many careers in Hollywood because of their political beliefs, and that Kazan had publicly stated that he had no regrets for that action. In response, there were loud protests against his selection for the award and some attendees of the awards ceremony, such as Nick Nolte , Ed Harris, stayed in their seats and refused to applaud when he received the award.

[on Marlon Brando] He was deeply rebellious against the bourgeois spirit, the over-ordering of life.
