I guess I came to terms with my demons. Or else I’d be in big trouble, wouldn’t I? Horrifying as it was to crack up in the public eye, it made me look at myself and fix it. People were exploitative; that’s human nature. I’ll tell you, being pretty crazy while being chased by the National Enquirer is not good. The British tabloids were the worst. But you take the cards you’re dealt, and I got better. I’m now ferociously healthy in body and mind. You couldn’t pay me to go near a psychiatrist again. Stopping seeing them was my first step to getting well.

I suppose I was about 15 when I started getting roles, and we have this thing at my school that’s a festival, and I did a play and I just thought, This is as much fun as you can legally have. And then I applied to drama school, which is quite a competitive business in England, and I managed to get it, and it boosted my confidence a little bit. It was a gradual thing, there was no epiphany moment.

[on approaching the character of Mr. Darcy for Pride and Prejudice:] I find Darcy very sympathetic, I find it heartbreaking that he’s seen as very haughty and proud – and he is those things – but he’s a young man who is still grieving for his parents. He’s from an ancient family and has this huge responsibility, but it seemed to me that he’s still trying to work out who he is and how to be in the world. I found that very interesting, and I found him very sympathetic.

When you’re a young actor, there’s this pressure to rush. But I hope to be doing this into my sixties and seventies, so I’d prefer to take my time. There’s so much of a desire in the entertainment industry for newness, a desire to build somebody up and then treat them as old news within six months. I think you’d be naive if you didn’t try to hold on to your own way of doing things.

[on his acting role in Back to the Future Part II (1989)] It was okay. I mean, I didn’t really like the film very much. I wasn’t happy with my performance in it either, but, you know, it’s basically a multi-million dollar piece of trash.

[on Weird ‘Al’ Yankovic’s “Bedrock Anthem”, a parody of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Under the Bridge” and “Give It Away Now”] I didn’t think it was very good. I mean “Yabba, dabba do”? I don’t know. What did you think?… I mean I like “Weird” Al, but everyone has swung and missed. Except for me of course.

In 1970, she auditioned for Playboy’s Playmate of the Month and got as far as a test series of photos taken in the Mexican jungle. She was fully nude except for a gold chain around her waist. Playboy decided not to use her at the time, but paid her $3,000 for the test. After she became a star on Three’s Company (1976), Playboy published the entire series of photos and the handwritten Data Sheet that each potential Playmate fills out (in which she gives the year of her birth as 1947). At the time of its publication, she was a popular (and for her, lucrative) spokeswoman in a series of TV commercials for Ace Hardware. Following the publication of the pictures, Ace abruptly fired her, citing the contract’s morals clause.

It wasn’t the ‘miracle of engineering’ that is the human body that was filling me with a mad desire to live my days and nights in a pair of scrubs. The hard truth was I did not remotely want to be a surgeon. I actually just wanted to be on Grey’s Anatomy (2005).

Now most of Alice (2009) isn’t really a political social commentary, but I think a big message, here, is that the culture we’re involved in is fascinated with very quick fixes and instant gratification.
