This [The Social Network (2010)] was not the sort of script you improvise on. With Aaron Sorkin, it’s immediately clear what the rhythm of the scene is. It’s similar to reading Shakespeare. In fact, it’s a lot like great theater. I looked at some of the lengthier scenes as if I was doing a play. You find the story arc of the scene, discover different moments, build upon them to make it as rich as possible. reconciled his intense control with his disengagement. He might appear detached and bored, but he’s always working to control the entire room.

Born in 1895 in Kansas, into a vaudeville family performing with the likes of Houdini (who coined his name ‘Buster’), Keaton was an early physical talent.

He entered film in his early twenties making shorts, and was deemed a star upon his first feature, 1920’s The Saphead. Keaton wrote, directed and starred in many of his own films, as well as doing studio comedies which did not garner him critical success.

With the discovery of lost stock of his early work, and 1952’s Limelight with Charlie Chaplin, Buster was finally recognized as an icon of his genre. Buster Keaton died in 1966.

Over there [Germany], the business is based on mediocrity. On a high level, admittedly, but mediocrity. You reach a certain level, beyond which you will not go. Not just in career but in challenges and opportunity. It’s interesting for the specific issue of how to cope with an actor’s life. To lead an actor’s life. What do you do if you have a stretch of five years where you only get mediocre offers and nothing to sink your teeth into? That’s where it is difficult. Becoming an actor is one thing. Being an actor is entirely different.
