THE FIRST NIGHT, 21min., Czech Republic Directed by Silvia Gregorova A tragicomedy based on the eponymous short story by Luigi Pirandello, which was first published in 1900. While the original story takes place in Sicily, the plot of this film adaptation is set in a contemporary Czech village. Due to various family interests, the young violinist Ani?ka and the widowed, aging gravedigger František are forced into an unwanted marriage by their relatives. We thus follow a story about loneliness, about love beyond the grave, but also about trying not to resent life and learning to move on, even though the loss of our loved ones still hurts.

[on whether he thinks he is a good actor] I took you in, didn’t I? I rest my make-up case.
[during an interview about his new album in 1999] I have nothing to say about the new album. Can I go now? Talking about art is like dancing about architecture.
I rate Morrissey as one of the best lyricists in Britain. For me, he’s up there with Bryan Ferry.
[on receiving an honorary degree from Boston’s Berklee College of Music] Any list of advice I have to offer to a musician always ends with, “If it itches, go and see a doctor.”.
I know about Kylie [Kylie Minogue] and Robbie [Robbie Williams] and Pop Idol (2001) and stuff like that. You can’t get away from that when you hit the [British] shore, so I know all about the cruise ship entertainment aspect of British pop.
[asked who he sounded like] I don’t sound like nobody.
[asked what kind of music he sings] I sing all kinds.
I don’t like being called Elvis The Pelvis. That’s gotta be one of the most childish expressions I’ve ever heard coming from an adult.
Some people tap their feet, some people snap their fingers, and some people sway back and forth. I just sorta do ’em all together, I guess.
[his acceptance speech from the 1970 Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation Awards] When I was a child, ladies and gentlemen, I was a dreamer. I read comic books, and I was the hero of the comic book. I saw movies, and I was the hero in the movie. So every dream I ever dreamed has come true a hundred times . . . I learned very early in life that “Without a song, the day would never end; without a song, a man ain’t got a friend; without a song, the road would never bend – without a song”. So I keep singing a song. Goodnight. Thank you.
“Plastic Tourism” is more than a documentary; it challenges viewers to confront uncomfortable truths. It is a call to action and testament of the delicate balance between human leisure and environmental responsibility.
Get to know the filmmaker:
What motivated you to make this film?
There are many plastic trashes on beaches & we have tried hard to solve it by many ways but not effective enough to solve it. So we hope this movie can open eyes of many tourists, business people on beaches, government & local people to be aware more about these plastic trashes & together solve it well.
What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
I was so touched & happy that other people in other part of earth appreciate this movie well & pay attention to the earth’s critical condition at this moment.

QUOTES:
I don’t recall ever deciding to pursue a career in acting.
I have a very weak stomach for horror. I need curtains on the front windows of my house because that heightens the whole fear factor.
I really miss doing stage though, I really do. I actually prefer that, hands down to anything else and I can do it in bits and pieces but it’s not that easy to commit to a play. Life’s much easier if you can get work in TV or film so I don’t know. I’ll have a summer hiatus so maybe that’s when I can do it.
I’m not religious, but the tradition, the culture and the history are very important to me.
