• If you want a dog, go to your local animal shelter and adopt one. It’s not rocket science, it’s dog science.

• I think my wife has always been aware, whatever country we have been in, of my dramatic leading man status; a little too dramatic she would probably say.

• On the surface, it’s really easy to dismiss certain characters, but sometimes you find that the most interesting parts are disappointingly shallow. It’s your job as an actress to pull that person apart, and work out why they act the way that they do.
• I’m starting to shake it off, I am quite self-conscious, and it’s only when I’m playing roles that I can escape that. The older I get, the more people tell me it’s absolutely fine to be the way you are with all your quirks and nuances, and I wish I’d learnt that younger – I would have relaxed a bit more.
• My style icons would be people like Brigitte Bardot and old Hollywood actresses who always look so stunning, cool and chic. I like classic and timeless looks.

• [on working with Meryl Streep on Plenty (1985)and A Cry in the Dark (1988)] By the time we did the second I was very comfortable with her. She scared the shit out of me in the first one. I was too young and too bedazzled by her. I was daunted. And I think on day one we had a sex scene. I wonder how many actors have done sex scenes with Meryl Streep. Probably just a handful.

• We all fantasize about a relationship we’d like to do over or something we’d like to change about our past. I think there are a lot more opportunities for second chances in our lives than we think.

• … I’m on a TV show, which I’m so lucky to be on. It pays my rent, so I don’t need to make a ton of money on music, and music has always been my first love. I’m not in this business for fame or money. That’s something I learned from being a kid at the Met. The kids weren’t unionized. We made 25 bucks a night and there were horses onstage – no joke – that were making $800. So when you’re valued, at least monetarily, less than a farm animal, you realize you’re there because you really love it.
• [on if it it’s a part of her career strategy to not be typecast as “a young hottie starlet”] …actually don’t think I have a strategy. I think in terms of instinct, if in my gut it feels like the right character, if I feel it’s a story that needs to be told. Of course in retrospect it was an excellent idea to go do something that was not glamorous, because I think people did see me as princess-y after The Phantom of the Opera (2004) and Poseidon (2006) and big-budget movies. Looking back on it, if it was a strategy it would have been a really good one. It happened that I ended up emotionally attaching to a character that I was the right age for when they were casting it. This show [Shameless (2011)] had also been around for a couple of years. There was another incarnation of it at HBO with Woody Harrelson in the William H. Macy role, so I wouldn’t have been the right age for it at that time. So much of Hollywood is luck.

• on nude scenes double standards] There are hour-long compilations of world-famous male actors with nude scenes who win Oscars and get praised for that work, but the moment a woman does it, it degrades them. They’re not actresses. They just take off their tops so they can get a role.
