PARADISE OF COLORS, 3min., Japan
Directed by Jialiang Liu
The human eyes are approximately 6.5 centimeters apart. Therefore, when we observe an object, the retinas of both eyes present slight differences. These differences are processed in the brain, and the two images are merged together. This process enables us to perceive space. If the images cannot be fully merged, it may result in seeing only the image from one eye or experiencing alternating or switching between two images. This phenomenon is known as binocular rivalry.

Director Statement

Though not directly linked in plot, “Solvent” is the spiritual successor to “Masking Threshold” (2021) and “Razzennest” (2022), forming a trilogy bound by a shared spirit. These films are kindred works, forbidden siblings.

“Solvent” delves into the haunting shadows of history, where past sins resurface in surreal and unexpected ways. At its heart, the film confronts the true horror of history by weaving it into a narrative that disturbs yet entertains. A project that explores memory, guilt, and the human struggle to face our darkest secrets.

My connection to this story is deeply personal. Set and shot on my maternal grandparents’ derelict farm, the location underscores the link between past and present, bridging the real and imagined. The character Wolfgang Zinggl, depicted through photographs of my grandfather, Otto Zucker, embodies the complex legacy of World War II history. This representation addresses the silence and reluctance that have plagued generations of German and Austrian families, including my own. Many of Zinggl’s lines are directly quoted from conversations I’ve overheard—whether from neighbors, passersby, or participants in online forums. There are many references and much subtext in Zinggl’s story, such as the right-wing obsession with esoterica and new-age medicine. Additionally, the Nazi character initially “disappears” in 2014: 70 years after his work at the KZ, and briefly before the Syrian refugee crisis that reignited severe racism in Europe. The fictional timeline of the film plays out in the months leading up to the October 7 attacks.

Body horror and grotesque elements add complexity to the exploration of guilt and memory, incorporating almost Freudian tropes about filth, destruction, and eroticism. Character transformations symbolize the inner turmoil of confronting the past, bringing these horrors to the surface. The film’s grotesque imagery underscores its themes, depicting the twisted and deformed nature of the past that shapes our present. One of my historical consultants, a member of the Jewish Association of Austria, praised the depiction of post-war family psychodynamics and what he calls “realism through grotesqueness.” While “Solvent” features an artistically exaggerated core, it diverges from typical horror films that use Nazis as central motifs. My goal is to use this stylized approach to explore the enduring effects of Nazi ideology and its infiltration into modern society.

For my co-author Ben Roberts, “Solvent” became a meditation on authority and quietism. It explores Martin Luther’s concept of total submission to authority, akin to divine command, and connects it to the quietism that followed the devastation of World War I. The film grapples with the humanist reckoning of the millions lost and forgotten, highlighting the silent suffering of history’s overlooked voices. It aims to challenge viewers to reflect on the cost of blind obedience and the balance between authority and individuality.

+++ Update, October 2024: Premiering “Solvent” on September 26, 2024, just days before Austria’s election, made the film’s themes even more urgent. With the far-right FPÖ emerging as the leading party, Oskar Deutsch, President of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde (IKG) Wien, warned of its ties to nationalist Burschenschaften linked to Nazi ideology. His statement that the FPÖ’s rise feels “threatening to many” added chilling relevance to my film’s theme.

THE CLOSURES, 72min., France
Directed by Lucia Arellano
After many years, Rafael decides to report the principal of his school for sexual assault. As part of the process he had to give his testimony in the same building where his guerrilla father was murdered at the hands of the police.

http://www.cinando.com/cintamanifilms
https://www.facebook.com/cintamanifilms
https://www.twitter.com/cintamanifilms

Director Statement

Rafael is a prism through which we observe another space-time. From Belgium we want to look at Peru, and from the present we want to look at the past. The memories suspended in Rafael’s memory reappear according to the circumstances in which he lives and what
pursue him in the present.

Duality is the axis of the formal approach of our work. There is duality between the images and the voice-over, like two languages that are juxtaposed. There is duality between two silences, the silence around sexual abuse and the silence around the father. To each Silence corresponds to one story and one half of the film.

The images show us the present, that is, a week at the end of autumn in Brussels.

We see the daily life of a happy, composed family, in which everything is security and confidence in the future. They are banal images: taking her daughter to the park, going to the carousel on the Grand Place, preparing for the feast of Saint Nicholas. Along with these situations, they expect the moving to the new apartment that they have just bought and that will be the step to a new stage in the family’s life.

Rafael’s voice-over, reflective, sometimes funny, sometimes childish, transports us to another place, takes us to Peru, and to another time, to the past. He takes us back to his childhood, when he began to suffer violence from the principal of his school. Rafael tells us about that silence and then moves on to another silence, around the death of his father and his militancy. He takes us even further, telling the story of Micaela Bastidas in the 18th century, after whom he takes his daughter’s name.

The image of his father is a duality in itself, a person who participated in the armed conflict in his country, both a victim and a victimizer. This situation creates anguish in Rafael that even now he does not know how to process. Understanding the complexity of this duality is where we want to take viewers of this psychic path.

We imagine this film as two parallel paths: on the one hand, a sensory experience on the theme of a family in Brussels, pastel colors, the constantly gray sky, eternal underground transport that leads nowhere.
On the other hand, we hear a story that is both intimate and political, where personal history and history of a country are found in a character: Rafael, orphan of a guerrilla, the son of a terrorist. In our minds we visualize the Lurigancho neighborhood, the economic difficulties of his childhood, the abuse, the stigma.

We want to use atonal, electroacoustic music that takes us to a hallucinatory dimension, that allows us to see the gray sky of Lima behind the autumn sky of Brussels.

Only at the end of the film does the voice connect with the image, and the character speaks directly to the camera: it is time to make “the closings,” as Rafael calls them.
