Died Today (October 5th): Charles Napier (1936–2011)

charlesnapier.jpgCharles Napier (1936–2011)

Born: April 12, 1936 in Mt. Union, Kentucky, USA
Died: October 5, 2011 (age 75) in Bakersfield, California, USA

[2009] Anyone can be a director now, as you well know. There’s no union, basically, per se anymore. They say it is, but these kids are going out and making . . . I just did a western for some guy’s grandson up in Oregon, who is a timber baron, and he put up 200 grand for it. I did a film in Miami for a car dealer who wanted his daughter to be on-screen. And they never go anywhere. They just lay around on shelves. Somebody ought to wise up and figure out how to sell those movies at WalMart, you know? But people have that kind of money, or they used to. It’s tough times now for all of us. Everybody’s scared to death. Nobody knows what’s going to happen now. I get along day by day, and that’s about the way it goes, and I always look forward to tomorrow. I’m as excited about doing the next one as I am the first one, and the energy is still there. Of course, my memory’s not as good as it used to be, so what the hell. Marlon Brando never learned a line in his life, so I don’t feel too bad, you know.

Made 70 appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962).

[in a 1986 interview, explaining the origin of his “no respect” routine] I had this joke: “I played hide and seek; they wouldn’t even look for me”. To make it work better, you look for something to put in front of it: “I was so poor, I was so dumb”, so this, so that. I thought, “Now what fits that joke?” Well, “No one liked me” was all right. But then I thought, “A more profound thing would be, ‘I get no respect!’ “.

[about how he and partner Steve Wozniak tried to get major computer companies interested in their personal computer, which turned out to be the Apple] So we went to Atari and said, “Hey, we’ve got this amazing thing, even built with some of your parts, and what do you think about funding us? Or we’ll give it to you. We just want to do it. Pay our salary, we’ll come work for you”. And they said, “No”. So then we went to Hewlett-Packard, and they said, “Hey, we don’t need you. You haven’t got through college yet”.

[on the difference between billionaires and regular people] Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.

As of October 12, 2014 she had not contacted family or friends. On October 16, 2014, family and friends found a body in a ravine that they believed to be hers. Despite pleas from the family the police refused to help with search and rescue efforts. She was one of a 1000+ missing Native women whom the police never searched for.

I’m a victim of my own insides. There was a time when I wanted to know everything. It used to make me very unhappy, all that feeling. I just didn’t know what to do with it. But now I’ve learned to make that feeling work for me. I’m full of emotion and I want a release, and if you’re on stage and if it’s really working and you’ve got the audience with you, it’s a oneness you feel.

[on Mia Farrow] Trying to describe Mia is like trying to describe dust in a shaft of sunlight. There are all those particles. Her conversation is clotted.

[in 1968, on his career] . . . totally isolated, really suffocating. As a child, I was always lied to about myself and about the world.

[on Gail Davis] There are lots of girls who can ride and shoot and lots who can act, but the girl who could do both just couldn’t be found. Then this kid came along and I didn’t have any more problems. A whole generation of children grew up with Gail Davis playing Annie Oakley on television. Before that she co-starred with me in several of my movies. She also toured with me on a number of occasions. Gail was an extremely talented individual. She had a kind, generous heart and brought so much joy to so many children. She never stopped doing that right up to the day she passed away.

Died Today (October 2nd): Rock Hudson (1925–1985)

Born: November 17, 1925 in Winnetka, Illinois, USA
Died: October 2, 1985 (age 59) in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA

His legal name was Roy Fitzgerald. When meeting John F. Kennedy, the American president remarked: “They say all Fitzgeralds are related”, to which Hudson replied, “I guess that would make Ella happy”.

I also remember meeting Gary Cooper at a party. I was so impressed that I blurted out that all the stars I had met before had been terrific people. Cooper thought about it for a minute, then said, “Yes, I suppose we are, the ones who are on top. But watch out for the ones who haven’t quite made it, or are past it.” It was valuable advice.
