Was a victim of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Head injuries from a motorcycle crash in late 2011 were followed by increasingly bizarre behavior culminating in arrests in 2012, additional head injuries in jail, misdiagnosis as “psychotic with chemical dependency,” despite never testing positive for drugs that year and never having any previous criminal history.

[Williams, an ultra-conservative Republican, replying to a question about US President Barack Obama] Don’t like him at all. I think he wants to create a socialist country. The people he associates with are very left-wing. One is registered as a Communist [a rumor at the time that turned out be false]. Obama is following Marxist theory. He’s taken over the banks and the car industry. He wants the country to fail.

[on his support of ex-wife Claudine Longet after she shot to death her lover, skier Spider Sabich, in 1976] I had to be there for her. She is the mother of my children. And we never stopped being friends. I still accept her story that the shooting was accidental. Bing Crosby’s wife once told me that she was amazed that I had taken so much trouble to help Claudine after we divorced. I said that anybody would have done the same thing, and she said, “Bing wouldn’t.” I think she meant that Bing was a very rigid guy, and once you had screwed up, you were off his list. Well, that’s not the kind of guy I am.

I was called to [Louis B. Mayer]’s office to discuss a long-term contract he wanted me to sign. He told me he had been impressed by my work at other studios and that he felt I would be an asset to MGM. He peered at me over his glasses and suggested I tell him about myself. I started by saying I came from New Brunswick. “That’s in Canada”, I added. “I know where New Brunswick is”, said Mayer rather snippy. “Where in New Brunswick were you born?” “Saint John”, I replied. Mayer jumped to his feet and thumped on his desk. “Young man”, he shouted, “you can’t influence me with lies like that. Who told you to say you came from Saint John?” Finally I quietened him down and convinced him I really was from Saint John. I had to tell him where half-a-dozen streets and buildings were that he remembered. But I left his office with a contract for much more money than I expected and we were friends until the day he died.

[when asked for suggestions on how to judge acting] I have three tests. First, which dominates, the character or the actor? With very few exceptions it should be the character. Even Don Siegel’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) is about that to a degree. People discover who they are and what they’re all about by meeting their doppelgängers. I have deliberately tried to mix it up in my movies, because I enjoy visiting different worlds. However, thematically, I find that things keep coming up. Self-examination to begin with. You know, who am I, how did I get here and how do I become a better version of myself. Self-destructiveness, because that is the beginning or negation of self-examination”.

Died at 27 years old, making him a member of the “27 Club”; The 27 Club is a group of prominent musicians who died at the age of 27. Other members include The Rolling Stones co-founder Brian Jones, singer Janis Joplin, The Doors frontman Jim Morrison, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse.

I will be dead in five years’ time, but while I am here, I will travel many highways and I will, of necessity, die at a time when my message of love, peace and freedom can be shared with people all over the world.
