I worked very hard to get Jacob’s Ladder (1990). At first, they wanted Susan Sarandon, Andie MacDowell or Michelle Pfeiffer. At some point, they wanted Susan Sarandon, and Madonna wanted the part. They auditioned all of them. I begged to be auditioned. I begged and begged and when I auditioned, the chemistry was right and Adrian [Lyne] and I were just taken with each other. I auditioned for six months, twice a week. The reason I kept going back was because Adrian was literally fighting for me to get the role.

I first got into acting when I was 14, coming back from a junior high school basketball game. My mom picked me up and she had been mentioning, prior to that, this community production of ‘Godspell’, a couple towns over. I was reluctant, at first, and she bribed me with some great dinner that was in that town, neighboring the theater.

The 1990s, in New York at least, were all about who could have the baggiest pants, and I definitely got swept up in that fad. Luckily, it didn’t last long – but I’ve made sure that my pants fit ever since.

[on the symbolism of two of her tattoos in Budget Living magazine] The triangle on my chest represents the divinity of myself and others. The band around my arm represents the creative essence of life in a swirl of positive and negative forces.

[on her refusal to appear in Edgeplay: A film about the Runaways] To me, the Runaways is my baby, so you have to understand my perspective. If there’s gonna be a Runaways movie, it should be about what we accomplished, the tours we did, the bands we played with, the people we inspired. I’m not gonna participate in a Jerry Springer fest, bottom line. With any band, you’re gonna have interpersonal conflicts, but if that’s what they thought the Runaways were about, about breaking a bass or putting on make-up, well, it’s very disappointing. Very, very disappointing. I wanted nothing to do with it because that’s not the band I was in. [The film] was a totally different take on what went down.
