I tried once to watch Paranormal Activity (2007) alone because I had a different version of it – a new cut. And I said, “Oh, I want to see what they changed”. And I put it in and got to the first knife scene and had to turn it off. I was like, “No, no, no, no, no. I can’t do this”.

[on Slumdog Millionaire (2008)] – You leave India, but it never leaves you. It’s an extraordinary place and you learn about yourself as a person and as a filmmaker. It’s an incredibly generous place and it’s an incredibly contradictory place. And these contradictions are on a viciously extreme scale: the poverty and the wealth, the nuclear status [but] no toilets – half the population of Mumbai have no toilets. I was trying to capture some of that, really, and we did it by some extreme storytelling. People say, ‘How can you go from the deliberate maiming of a child to a big Bollywood song and dance in the end?’ Well, you don’t try to smooth the path from one to the other. I was trying to put all the elements into the film that belong to the city, that are a part of that city.

I’ve had parallel careers in the theatre and in movies. In the theatre, I often play characters with a strong sense of innocence who aren’t as intelligent as I am. The reason: my size. I seem sort of big and good-natured on stage. It would be too much for a big man to play a forbidding character on stage. So I play big people who are fairly gentle. It’s a wonderful thing to build a career on. What I offer to movie-makers is that I can put a tremendous amount of theatrical background and technical equipment at their disposal. I can make believable the over-the-top characters.

And although I wasn’t involved in the trading side of things, I was still around that culture, and I ultimately decided it just wasn’t for me. As a matter of fact, I wanted to be a New York City firefighter. I didn’t make it in, though.
