  • … I’m on a TV show, which I’m so lucky to be on. It pays my rent, so I don’t need to make a ton of money on music, and music has always been my first love. I’m not in this business for fame or money. That’s something I learned from being a kid at the Met. The kids weren’t unionized. We made 25 bucks a night and there were horses onstage – no joke – that were making $800. So when you’re valued, at least monetarily, less than a farm animal, you realize you’re there because you really love it.
  • [on if it it’s a part of her career strategy to not be typecast as “a young hottie starlet”] …actually don’t think I have a strategy. I think in terms of instinct, if in my gut it feels like the right character, if I feel it’s a story that needs to be told. Of course in retrospect it was an excellent idea to go do something that was not glamorous, because I think people did see me as princess-y after The Phantom of the Opera (2004) and Poseidon (2006) and big-budget movies. Looking back on it, if it was a strategy it would have been a really good one. It happened that I ended up emotionally attaching to a character that I was the right age for when they were casting it. This show [Shameless (2011)] had also been around for a couple of years. There was another incarnation of it at HBO with Woody Harrelson in the William H. Macy role, so I wouldn’t have been the right age for it at that time. So much of Hollywood is luck.

  • on nude scenes double standards] There are hour-long compilations of world-famous male actors with nude scenes who win Oscars and get praised for that work, but the moment a woman does it, it degrades them. They’re not actresses. They just take off their tops so they can get a role.
  • I had boobs before other girls and I felt ostracized for it
  • [on nepo babies] I had no idea getting into this industry how many people have connections. I started from ground zero, and I know how f***ing hard it is. “Now I see how someone can just walk in a door, and I’m like, ‘I worked my f***ing ass off for ten years for this’.

Short Film Review: IF I WERE A CARPENTER. Animation. Directed by Elizabeth Lewis

This hand drawn animated film is based on the classic song If I Were a Carpenter and sung by the great Bobby Darin. How can love conquer the social divide? This film is a tender slightly tongue in cheek story of how love can transform us and ultimately bridge our differences.

Review by Victoria Angelique:

The music video, IF I WERE A CARPENTER,  utilizes a long lost art style to animate the lyrics and bring new life to this 1966 song written by Tim Harden and sung by Bobby Darin. It’s quite rare to see hand drawn animation anymore, much less in the form of pencil sketches. It worked for this particular song, not only to give it the vintage feeling, but to add another layer of symbolism to the lyrics.

The lyrics are heavy about the carpenter longing for a woman that looks like a lady. He’s insecure, wondering if she would want a man that works with his hands. Each frame of the film being drawn with pencil emphasizes the importance of crafts that involve developing unique skills that are appreciated much more if they are done by hand. It brings a new level of respect for the carpenter that longs for his own family.

The animated video and the corresponding lyrics have strong family themes. A carpenter dreams of marrying a lady, but his insecurities make him wonder if she would want to marry a tradesman. He knows he could make her happy and make her emotionally rich by being a devoted husband. The second he sees the lady, he pictures her as a mother and wants to be the man that can provide a living for her so that they can raise a family.

This music video has a timeless feeling. It asks the questions about what one looks for in a spouse and a partner to raise a family with, while allowing minor insecurities to hold them back. It gives into daydreams, allowing the carpenter to fantasize about what his life would be like if he could marry this beautiful lady.

Short Film Review: UNDER. Directed by Nick Benjamin

Review by Julie C, Sheppard:

The US horror short Under is masterfully suspenseful. The direction is exceptional – – the viewer is quickly caught in an ominous web of both tension and apprehension.

The camera work is fabulous – – it moves dizzily across the floorboards and under the bed. Fear is generated by a terrifying sound design, complete with creaks, growls, bangs, creepy toy voices and heavy breathing. The frightening musical refrains enhance the nightmarish build up.

Props are highly professional, notably the well-crafted monster with its disgusting blue goop, supported by a well-selected residential location with many doorways for evil to hide. Also notable is the convincing naturalistic performances of the two lead children.

Startling and chilling, this horror short does what it sets out to do – – to create a suspense that entertains.

Director Statement

This film has been a seed in my mind for many years now. I put my blood, sweat, and tears into this. It is my thesis to complete my undergraduate degree. I think it perfectly captures my weird sense of humor and love for all things horror. Making this film meant everything to me as my friends and family rallied around to support me. It is my baby, and bringing it to life has been one of my greatest honors. I hope it makes you laugh.

Rosalyn, a wealthy and talented high school senior, grapples with immense grief after the loss of her brother in a surfing accident. The void left behind by his absence consumes her, and she begins a descent into addiction—alcohol becoming her solace as she numbs the pain and confusion. Amidst her downward spiral, she finds herself in a complex relationship with two other people, Isaac, and Emma. Drawn to the comfort and sweetness of their affection, the throuple provides a fleeting sense of escape, but Rosalyn’s internal struggle with grief and substance abuse complicates her search for self-love, growth, healing and identity.

Director Statement
I was immediately drawn to the story of two young women who refuse to wait for permission or apologize for their desires. In a culture that pressures young people, especially women, to suppress their sexuality and conform to rigid expectations, watching these characters take control felt both powerful and necessary. Their boldness in pursuing what they want becomes an act of rebellion against societal constraints.

The setting became equally important to the narrative. California’s Spanish Colonial architecture carries a haunting beauty built on histories we collectively refuse to acknowledge. The grand estates of places like Rancho Palos Verdes function as fortresses of privilege: stunning yet exclusionary. I wanted these structures to operate as characters themselves, gorgeous but subtly menacing, reflecting the beautiful facades that often mask darker truths.

At its core, this film explores how the throuple evolves into a chosen family. When traditional family structures and societal institutions fail to provide the love and acceptance young people desperately need, they must forge their own networks of care and support. These three characters discover something authentic together: a way of loving and supporting each other that surpasses the hollow relationships they witness in the adult world around them.

Stylistically, we employed handheld cinematography inspired by verité techniques and my background in documentary filmmaking. Multiple perspectives unfold simultaneously, creating an intimate, unguarded viewing experience. Rather than observing from a distance, audiences discover these pivotal moments alongside the characters, fostering deeper emotional connection and authenticity.

This story feels particularly urgent in our current moment. Young people are actively redefining love, relationships, and family structures while traditional institutions crumble around them. In an era defined by uncertainty and upheaval, the most radical act might simply be creating your own version of home: building the love and stability that the world has failed to provide.
