[on reasons for his role in White Irish Drinkers (2010)]: One, I really liked the title, that’s how shallow I am. But the main reason was, I was afraid of it. You kind of heave a sigh and go, “Oh God, I’m going to have to go there?”.

Acting can be a very reactive profession. Acting is a fantastic thing, and it’s my life, but writing is also part of me too, so I did it and in so doing took responsibility for my own life. And it was very directly and specifically because of “Beyond Glory” that Jim Cameron cast me in Avatar (2009). And Avatar is responsible for the good fortune I’ve had over the last few years.

…My dad had gone to Swarthmore. He is New York Jewish and my mom is New York Irish Catholic. You put them together and you get me. I consider myself quite ethnically Jewish, without being particularly religious (laughs). Although, I can leave that door open for the future, if I need it.

Transformers (2007) was important and defining for me because it taught me about what kinds of movies I want to make and the kind of actor I want to be, and I have a long way to go before I become that actor.

The earth is such a voluminous, sparse, wild place that has its own rhythm that human beings try to control and strategize our way around, but the truth is, if you’re out someplace like the ocean on a capsized boat, it doesn’t matter if you have academic degrees, or if you’re a martial-arts ninja. Nature is a bigger force than you.

Sometimes when Australians go overseas, it’s as though the “Aussie” is refined out of them. I don’t know why. It’s never happened to me, because I’m really proud of it. There is a great relief in experiencing the worst vicariously.

There was no professional theater in Cork, but still I did a lot of performing.
I once saw my mother playing Mary Magdalene in a parish event. But she had to put the role aside in order to go and front the choir who were singing at the same occasion. She left the stage halfway through the Crucifixion.

I’m not on the run from anything and I’m not at all clear about what I’m running towards. But as some great writer put it, I want to be certain that when I arrive at death, I’m totally exhausted.

Well, obviously I’m not Mark Wahlberg – I have much better abs and I look much better in a pair of Calvin Kleins but when I saw Mark Wahlberg interacting with the world, I realised that his stardom was sort of a result of the movies he had done and the publicity that he had got and the work that he did.

I think winter wear is communal. You get some gloves and a scarf from a lost-and-found box, wash them, wear them for a while until you lose them. Then somebody else does the same thing.

I think anybody who’s famous has to deal with their fame in their own way, and I dealt with it by making a film about a kid who’s looking out into the world of celebrity obsession.

I have a bunch of concepts and ideas that I want to do but I have also been growing my production company in general and looking to branch out of projects that I am directing and producing.
