[1983 interview] When I’m doing a film, I prefer the stage; when I’m working on stage, I prefer film. That doesn’t sound neurotic, does it? Seriously, I like them both. They’re both different. I’ve heard of a lot of actors who do both, who have done both for years, say that the stage is more fulfilling. Film is still new enough to me that, right now, I find film more fulfilling. In films you don’t have the audience and the communication and the contact that you do on stage. You have to wait six months or a year before you commune with an audience in a film, and you’re not even there when it happens… When you work in a film, you’re working in a vacuum… that also has advantages. It’s a different sensation which is not altogether unpleasant.

[on her quick success as an actress]: It was a bit cheeky, granted. What happened was that I obviously knew all the [The Tudors (2007)] crew well, and one of the drivers gave me a confidential cast list with all the actors’ agents’ details on it, and I wrote to them. I got picked up from that, and Merlin (2008) came along just a few months later. So I won the lottery! I do feel quite bad when everyone talks about how difficult it is to get a foothold in this [acting] business. Most actors slog for years. For instance, everyone on Merlin (2008) did four years at drama school, but I just lucked out.

It’s not an understatement to say that I owe everything as an actor to Merlin (2008). It was pretty much my first job, and I didn’t know what I was doing for many years on it. It wasn’t until the third and fourth series – the fourth series especially – that I really found my feet with the character, and as an actress.

[on Ashley Judd’s character driving a jet black Mustang in Twisted (2004)] That’s a direct homage to Bullitt (1968). And we looked a lot at Steve McQueen. In a way we wanted to have a woman character with the kind of energy that Steve McQueen had. Even though Steve McQueen was a huge star in his day, my feeling is that he was underrated. Now that Steve McQueen’s gone, we miss him. I don’t know of anybody who has that kind of kinetic energy that he brought to bear in movies like that.[2004]

I think you look like a fool as a director when you talk too much about what the actors are doing. You want them to listen to you, but personally speaking, I don’t want them to just follow everything I say without processing it. This is a problem for Asian actors. They are so polite, and they’ve been trained to smile and nod and agree with everything someone in power tells them. I’m not looking for conflict, but I’m not happy if someone is repressing their feelings either.

I love the Spider-Man character. And that’s what’s at the heart of it. That’s why I really love it. But there’s another fun thing that I never had before where you make your movie and a lot of people see it and they seem to like it. So it’s like oh my god, I’ve always been the nerd, lame ass guy on the side, but I made something that a lot of people like. I know that won’t last for long, and I’m obviously riding the Spider-Man thing. He’s a popular character for 40 years. So anyone who makes a Spider-Man movie gets to make a popular movie. But it’s fun to be popular, even if it’s a brief, lame thing, and even though I know it’s not important. I can’t help it. It’s really fun and I know how quickly things turn in Hollywood.
