Happy Birthday: David Sedaris

WILDsound Festival

davidsedaris.jpgDavid Sedaris

Born: December 26, 1956 in Johnson City, New York, USA

After a few months in my parents’ basement, I took an apartment near the state university, where I discovered both crystal methamphetamine and conceptual art. Either one of these things are dangerous, but in combination they have the potential to destroy entire civilizations.

My hands tend to be full enough dealing with people who hate me for who I am. Concentrate too hard on the millions of people who hate you for what you are and you’re likely to turn into one of those unkempt, sloppy dressers who sag beneath the weight of the two hundred political buttons they wear pinned to their coats and knapsacks.

‘Shit’ is the tofu of cursing.

I’m just a simple man trying to make his way in the universe.

Sometimes I think, ‘Oh, I wish I just had a nice job where you’re getting a salary.’ Just sometimes.

Happy Birthday: Beth Behrs

Always make sure you have your rent. At the end of the month, if you have to eat Ramen for a week because you won’t have your rent money, just do it but make sure your rent is all there so you’re not stressing about that. As long as you have your rent at least you have somewhere to live.

Women have been funny for years.

My best girlfriends are the girls I went to college with at UCLA.

Know who you are, because that’s how you will be cast at first. Then you can be Meryl Streep further down the road.

In today’s world, most people are working side jobs while waiting to do what they really want to do.

Politics is a game and a profession. It doesn’t really serve the people the politicians are supposed to serve.

I’m very lucky, I’ve got two very loving parents, still very much together, and always been very supportive.

You find with the really great actors, the ones you really admire and look up to, very often they’re very giving, generous, warm people.

Happy Birthday: Eden Sher

WILDsound Festival

edensherEden Sher

Born: December 26, 1991 in Los Angeles, California, USA

On Christmas, my family and I see a movie and go out for Chinese food. We don’t celebrate Christmas in the traditional sense, in that we do not actually celebrate Christmas.

I have some sarcastic sides of me.

I would love to be able to see as much of the world as possible, and volunteering, doing things in another community, living with a host family, are really effective ways to learn about cultures different from your own. And also to not feel lazy.

I love the holidays on ‘The Middle’ because I feel like I’m getting that very traditional American holiday experience that I never had growing up.

Happy Birthday: Jared Leto

WILDsound Festival

Born: December 26, 1971 in Bossier City, Louisiana, USA

[on receiving criticism from his peers] People talk shit – that’s what they do. There are negative people out there. I can’t worry about those people. The 15-year-old kid in me would probably say, ‘Fuck you,’ but the grown-up just kinda laughs and doesn’t pay attention to it. I think it’s just part of the game, whether you’re the President or the Pope or Björk or Bono, it doesn’t matter. If you have a certain amount of success, people throw stones. It’s all part of the Tall Poppy Syndrome, but whether you’re an athlete or an explorer, if you push and challenge yourself and your dreams, there are always going to be people out there that are gonna wanna talk about other people that are living dreams and challenges. If they think they’re doing me a favor they should…

Died Today (December 26th): Howard Hawks (1896–1977)

Rio Bravo (1959) was made because I didn’t like a picture called High Noon (1952). I saw “High Noon” at about the same time I saw another western picture, and we were talking about western pictures and they asked me if I liked it, and I said, “Not particularly”. I didn’t think a good sheriff was going to go running around town like a chicken with his head off asking for help, and finally his Quaker wife had to save him. That isn’t my idea of a good western sheriff. I said that a good sheriff would turn around and say, “How good are you? Are you good enough to take the best man they’ve got?” The fellow would probably say no, and he’d say, “Well, then I’d…

[about Arthur Miller’s semi-autobiographical play “After the Fall”] They should have called it “After the Money”!

Sometimes you do junk just to keep alive. You know it’s junk when you go in. You just hope you will do the best you can, and that the film will be entertaining. Many times, it isn’t, but you just do those things to pay the bills.

I would much rather be on the stage. I do films, but I’ve really been on stage most of my life. It’s not only more of an emotional experience, but it’s also a communication. It’s the satisfaction of saying something about the human condition through the author, with the actors acting as the instrument, and then hearing the audience response.
