Award winning Director, Animator and Illustrator and Storyboard Artist Robert Castillo discovered his passion for art and illustration at the tender age of five. Nicknamed “Sketch”, Castillo would draw his way through his difficult transition of returning to the US from the Dominican Republic, mastering English, and acclimating to the mostly white environment of Chelsea, Massachusetts.

It was an honor sitting down with one of the more sought out storyboard artists in Hollywood. In just the last year, Robert has worked on “Star Wars”, “Fifty Shades of Black”, “Ride Along 2”, “Keanu”,  “Captain America: Civil War”, “Bad Neighbours 2”, “X-Men: Apocalypse”, and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”.

Matthew Toffolo: You have worked as a Storyboard Artist on over 60+ productions in the last 15 years. Do you have a favorite experience?

Robert Castillo: I think that there are a few experiences but the one that sticks out to me would be…

I had a blast sitting down with the very talented storyboard artist Stephen Forrest-Smith. Stephen has worked on some of the most popular films in the last 15 years, including “The Dark Knight,” the last three “Harry Potter” films, and last year’s “Star Wars” film.

His candor in the following interview is educational and very entertaining. Enjoy:

Matthew Toffolo: When coming aboard a project on a Hollywood film, how does the process generally work? Do you start with a preliminary chat with the director about themes etc..? How early do you arrive before production? When do you generally exit the job?

Stephen Forrest-Smith: There really is no normal to my job anymore. Every project seems to be different now and asks for a different approach. A film project could call on a storyboard artist at any stage from pre-pre…

Matthew Toffolo: You have been the storyboard artist on over 40 productions in the last 20 years. Is there a film or two that you’re most proud of?

Cristiano Donzelli: First of all I want to say that I do this work because I love cinema, I’m very passionate about movies, so for me it’s not just a job…

Geoffrey Rowland has worked in the film and television industry for over 50 years. We chatted on the phone for 2 hours with topics ranging from our mutual love for baseball, life lessons, being Canadian, and of course film and editing. He was a pure joy to chat with. Enclosed are the highlights of our conversation:

Matthew: “The Young Messiah” is set to hit the theatres this week. Can you give us a sneak peak as to what to expect? How was your experience working on the film?

Geoffrey Rowland: Terrific experience. I worked 77 straight days editing that film. It became a part of me. I gave it my all and I think it’s a very good film.

MT: You’ve worked on over…

Alan Heim is an Oscar & Emmy winning editor. Many will say that he’s one of the greatest editors in the history of cinema. All you need to do it watch “Network” (1976), and “All that Jazz” (1979) to see the uniqueness of his talent. If you haven’t seen those films I highly suggest you do because they are timeless in their themes and character studies. It was an honor to chat with Alan about his career. A career that’s still going strong  at 80 years of age.

Matthew Toffolo: In the last many years you’ve worked with director Nick Cassavetes in collaboration (The Notebook, My Sister’s Keeper, The Other Woman, Alpha Dog). How did you first meet? What makes your working relationship so strong?

Alan Heim: I believe Dede Allen (Editor: The Hustler, Bonnie & Clyde) suggested I cut “The Notebook” and Nick and I have gotten along together very well since…

BLACK BALLOON was the winner of Best Cinematography at the June 2016 WILDsound FEEDBACK Film Festival. 

It was an honor speaking with the director Shachar Gal about the film.

Matthew Toffolo: What motivated you to make this film?

Shachar Gal: There are few things that attracted us about making the film.

Actually the first thoughts we had were more about the aesthetics and the atmosphere we wish to create.

The “torture” scene was the first part of the script and everything was kind of built around it. the dissonance between a birthday celebration and a cruel murder scene was the first spark in my brain.. So I have to admit it was not the “anti-bullying” idiology who brought me to make the film. The story about Noy (the girl) came after two different drafts. When we came up with “Black Balloon” it was after we where watching some item about bullying…

Tyler Lionel Parr’s short film IRONIED played to rave reviews at the June 2016 FEEDBACK Film Festival. Tyler was the writer, director, and 2 time star of the short.

Matthew Toffolo: What motivated you to make this film?

Tyler Lionel Parr: My motivation came from walking the streets of Toronto. It always pained me to see people who lived on the street, had so little and yet seemed to own the world. It was fascinating to me, on a primal level. How and why did they come to this ‘place’ in life. There was a story, and I wanted to know it.

MT: From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?

TP: 2 years and 16 days. I wouldn’t change a minute, no matter how arduous it was.
