With a modest amount of looks and talent and more than a modicum of serendipity, I’ve managed to stretch my 15 minutes of fame into more than half a century of good fortune.

[on the effect his own life experiences contributed to Hustle (2004)] I’ve never tried to con anybody and no one’s ever tried to con me. Although, maybe they have and I just don’t know.

There are a lot of pitfalls to success, and one is not listening to criticism. One of the the most important things you can do is hear criticism of yourself and embrace it, whether it be – in my case – artistic or personal.

[on what drew him to portraying Jay Gatsby] The idea of a man who came from absolutely nothing, who created himself solely from his own imagination. Gatsby’s one of those iconic characters because he can be interpreted in so many ways: a hopeless romantic, a completely obsessed wacko or a dangerous gangster, clinging to wealth.

[on playing the plantation owner in Django Unchained (2012)] There was absolutely nothing about this man that I could identify with. I hated him. It was one of the most narcissistic, self-indulgent, racist, horrible characters I’ve ever read in…

[presenting Ghost (1990) at the ArcLight Hollywood, April 2013] It’s something that touches people’s heart, it transcends and has comforted people’s soul in great loss and it has instilled a sense of hope and magic that those we love are always still with us. I’m truly grateful to have been part of this film, and I’m honored to be sharing with you tonight. I thank AFI and Target for bringing together this magical night for you to see it on the big screen.

No, honestly, I was quite intrigued by it. I thought it was smart! Obviously, it was symbolic of Ally’s biological clock ticking away, and I thought, what a great way to do that. I loved the fantasy sequences; I loved that we got to see her imagination come to life — on the imaginary dancing baby in Ally McBeal (1997).

I got a call from a girlfriend in L.A. She was also an actress, doing what they refer to as “pilot season”. She had read the script and she called me about it, and then I called my agent and he said, “Oh, yeah, I saw that and I passed”. [Beat] And I said, “Oh, well maybe we should revisit it”. So I did. I eventually flew out and…

I think it’s my job as a young actor to watch adult actors and take tips on the way they work.

I’d say James Dean is someone that’s really inspired me. Just the fact that he did only three movies before he died at such a young age, and yet everyone knows who he is. It really blows my mind.

[on whether acting is an art form] The technique is the craft. You can take a plot and tell it over and over again but to me, there’s an individual truth to it. First of all, in order for it to be art it has to be truthful. Secondly, it has to be individually true. It’s that true individuality and that real truth that makes it art.

[when someone asked him how to get into show business] You know how movie studios have a front gate? You get a Camaro with a steel grill, drive it through the gate, and once you’re on the lot, you’re in showbiz.

As a kid, I always wanted to be lots of things. I was a Walter Mitty type. I wanted to be in the French Foreign Legion, a detective, a doctor, a test pilot with a scarf, a fisherman who hauled in a tremendous marlin after a 12-hour fight.

[on painting] This year [1981] I got the idea when I was sitting in a hamburger joint and a hearse pulled up. A few minutes…

Get to know Cinematographer Michael Simmonds (Nerve, Vice Principals)

WILDsound Festival's avatarWILDsound Festival

Michael Simmonds is a wealth of knowledge when he chats about his love of cinematography. He is a man who is constantly looking into the future and only looking back when inspiration is needed. He is a rare talent who is able to move seamlessly from documentary to TV to feature films.  It was an honor to chat with him.

VP had very tight scripts and David Gordon Green would create film level blocking. The actors definitely added to the dialgue, but not any more or less than other projects I have been involved with. On a comedy, even if the actors improvise, its in regards to dialogue and not their actual movement, so it does not effect me. I alwas operate with headphones on so I can hear the actors perfectly and I can anticipate their movement.
