Interview with Costume Designer Malgosia Turzanska (Maggie’s Plan)

matthewtoffolo's avatarMatthew Toffolo's Summary

Chatting with Costume Designer Malgosia Turzanska was inspirational, educational, and fun! She’s a true talent and someone who is obviously in love with her job. Maggi

To learn more about Maglosia, go to her website: http://www.turzanska.com

maglosiaMatthew Toffolo: I recently interviewed director Rebecca Miller about the film “Maggie’s Plan” and she raved about her working relationship with you. How did you find working on the film and collaborating with Rebecca?

Malgosia Turzanska: Rebecca is a wonderful artist. She is a fearless writer and director and honestly, she took a chance on me. The images I brought to the first interview were so abstract, that it really took courage to trust they would end up as regular clothing rather than people dressed as snowflakes. I am very grateful to her for that trust, because it lead to one of my favorite collaborations. I am very proud that the costumes ended up…

Happy Birthday: Mick Foley

mickfoley.jpgHappy Birthday wrestler
Mick Foley

Born: Michael Francis Foley Sr.
June 7, 1965 in Bloomington, Indiana, USA

QUOTES:

[To Randy Orton, about how Foley and Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) lost to the team of Orton, Ric Flair and Dave Bautista (aka Batista)] “I’m very impressed that, in a three-on-two situation, you can defeat a Hollywood movie star and a writer of children’s books”.

[about getting knocked unconscious during Hell in a Cell] I had been knocked goofy countless times …. but this was the first time that a period of time elapsed and I wasn’t aware of it.

Wrestling has become so good at creating the illusion of disaster that when disaster does hit, it’s very difficult to tell the difference. Sadly, when Owen Hart died in the ring during a World Wrestling Federation pay-per-view, many initially thought it was just part of the show.

Eric Bischoff was the perfect heel. ECW fans hated both WCW and the World Wrestling Federation, but at least they respected Vince.

[about Ric Flair] When Flair is retired and fans are singing his praises as one of the greatest ever, I hope those same fans realize that, as a booker, this is the same guy who let both Mick Foley and Stone Cold Steve Austin walk away.

Happy Birthday: James Ivory

jamesivory.jpgHappy Birthday director James Ivory

Born: James Francis Ivory
June 7, 1928 in Berkeley, California, USA

QUOTES:

[on his affinity to India] It wasn’t as though I had a childhood preoccupation with India. It was completely accidental and was based on my seeing The River (1951) and later on seeing a group of miniature Indian paintings. And then, most important, seeing the films of Ray, the Apu trilogy. That’s what really got me started – a combination of things spread out over a period of six or so years.

[1984 interview] The first book she gave me to read was “The Europeans”; then I went through them all. But it’s very hard to get financing for a Henry James story. I spent many years trying with The Europeans (1979) and finally got the money from Britain. And the same with this one: a little American money, but, again, the English came up with most of it. Henry James just isn’t box office here, apparently. He’s more appreciated in England.

Ismail (Merchant) was very keen for us to do A Room with a View (1985). We had paid for the rights and it was just sitting there. But Ruth (Prawer Jhabvala) and I were working on another screenplay, a contemporary story, and I said, “Must we? I don’t want to do another period film right now.” Thank God we did! Because of that film a lot of opportunities were created in studios. They couldn’t understand how a film which cost $3.5 million to make could make $70 million at the box office. They thought we had some great secret.

Happy Birthday: Iggy Azalea

iggyazalea.jpgHappy Birthday Iggy Azalea

Born: Amethyst Amelia Kelly
June 7, 1990 in Sydney, Australia

QUOTES:

People criticize you for trying new things. I think, ‘I’m new! I’m 22!’ I don’t know exactly what my sound is or what I want my album to sound like, so I’m not releasing it yet. While I’m experimenting, I’ll let you in on the journey, and you can hear it for free.

It’s different, it’s weird to say, ‘She’s a white rapper or she can’t do this because she’s this color – this color does this thing. These are the boxes we have, this is what it is, don’t try to change it.’ And it’s crazy to me because I’m just not from that world, so I can’t really rock with it all the way.

I’ve never heard a man in a suit tell me what to wear; that’s not their forte. You hire your stylist; whatever someone’s image is as an artist is what they’ve chosen to portray.

I’ve been a little bit Las Vegas and casino-obsessed. So, I love some trashy glamour… and I think nothing’s trashier or more glamorous than a bit of a sheer number!

I’d dropped out of high school without really doing it on purpose – I’d just go home at lunch ‘cos I didn’t have friends, then stay there all afternoon listening to rap. It got to the point where I wouldn’t have passed even if I’d gone back. I was depressed, basically.

They say I’m insane because I need to have so much creative control. They say I’m unmanageable, but I’m not. I just know what I like. I’m obsessed with it. If you can’t control it, that’s like having somebody else paint your pictures. How could you do that? I never could.
