Born: December 6, 1963 in Odense, Denmark

His debut on film was in Ole Bornedal’s Nightwatch (1994). Since then a number of roles in, among others, Thomas Vinterberg’s The Biggest Heroes (1996), Susanne Bier’s Credo (1997) and Anders Thomas Jensen’s Flickering Lights (2000). However, the major breakthrough came in the film Festen (1998) by Thomas Vinterberg, playing the part as Christian, the son. This performance made him well known outside Denmark, earning him a bad guy role in the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough (1999) and a part in the English film Killing Me Softly (2002).

I busted a mirror and got seven years bad luck. But my lawyer thinks he can get me five.

A friend of mine once sent me a postcard with a picture of the entire planet Earth taken from space. On the back it said ‘Wish you were here.’
Be nice to your children. After all, they are going to choose your nursing home.

I had some eyeglasses. I was walking down the street when suddenly the prescription ran out.

A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

I wrote a song, but I can’t read music. Every time I hear a new song on the radio I think, ‘Hey, maybe I wrote that.’

Do you think that when they asked George Washington for ID that he just whipped out a quarter?

Humor is always based on a modicum of truth. Have you ever heard a joke about a father-in-law?

Music is the soundtrack of our life.

My business is teenagers. I don’t set trends. I just find out what they are and exploit them.

[on his methodology] I film quite a bit of footage, then edit. Changes before your eyes, things you can do and things you can’t. My attitude is always let it keep rolling.

[on the cinematography of Days of Heaven (1978)] With Néstor Almendros, we decided to film without any artificial light. It wasn’t possible in the houses at night, but outside, we shot with natural light or with the fire. When the American team was saying, ‘This is not how we should proceed,’ Nestor Almendros, very courageously insisted. As we filmed, the team discovered that it was technically easier, and I was able to capture absolute reality. That was my wish: to prevent the appearance…

[on “The Fast & the Furious” franchise and being real and authentic]: That’s what’s capturing people, unless of course you’re doing Avengers Assemble (2012) where you’ve gotta be larger than life and you’ve gotta be out there and turn green and drag your arm down the side of a building, and jump all over the place. But for us, I like having (special effects) to fall back on. You allow the creative minds to get in there and figure out how to do it real, and it gives you more to be proud of.

[on working on Hours (2013)]: What I’ve found recently is the heart, the soul, whatever you want to call it, it doesn’t differentiate: If you really live the experience making a movie, it’s…

For me, what I really want to come out of it is to show people that I can hold together a movie, be the number one character and play someone who is twenty or twenty-one.

I will always be the way I was a couple years ago before anything happened. And that’s to my parents’ credit, my amazing parents who have been around me my whole life and raised me right. I’m very happy with what has happened so far.

[on advice he receives from his father, Jerry Stiller] My father is always telling me to take care of myself and get a lot of rest. He’s always saying, “Sleep will fix anything. Go take a nap”. I think he’s right. I find when I get frazzled, if I get a good night’s sleep, I feel much better about things.

(1998 quote on auditioning) It’s hard to maintain a sense of dignity in an audition. I have done so many auditions where I’ve put it out there and have been met with that kind of blank stare – “Great! Thanks! OK! Great work! Thanks for coming in!” At the door I’m thinking, ‘What the hell am I doing with my life?’

[on Zoolander (2001)] It wasn’t…

[re quitting Criminal Minds (2005)] It wasn’t the right fit. I made a choice I didn’t want to make. I pushed myself, thinking I needed more fame, more economic security. One of the greatest gifts that Homeland (2011) has given me is it’s affirming on a daily basis. I’m always with the script, walking around with this stuff 24/7, so my head’s in a good place. The role is about listening, and when you don’t listen to yourself, you get in trouble. I wasn’t listening to myself in Heartburn (1986) [from which he was fired]. I listened to [my agent and] the culture at large saying, ‘You’ve got to be in a movie, this is going to make you,’ and it wasn’t who I was. Yes, I did Yentl…

[on Kiefer Sutherland] He taught me not to read anything in the media or on the Internet. He’s definitely a long-time mentor to me.

[on 24 (2001)] From the beginning, you could tell that it was something really different and it was 10 years of my life. I went from being an 18-year-old girl to a woman.

I’m not knocking 24 (2001), but after playing a character like Kim, you can’t help wanting to do something completely different. The criticism didn’t hurt me. I wasn’t writing the storylines, I was just doing the best job I could.
