[on working with the Coen brothers] I think they have a common theme, even though they work in completely different ways. Specificity of story – so clear with what it is they’re after – and different opinions about how to get there. They’re kind of unanimous in that way. Just to see the Coens at the state they are in with their careers, and how they still have this relentless pursuit to to tell the best version possible, and do all their homework – it’s incredible to have been able to witness.

Meg Ryan

Born: November 19, 1961 in Fairfield, Connecticut, USA

(Commenting on the nudity and sex in In the Cut (2003)) “You don’t go, ‘Wow! I get to do a nude scene.’ But I love the sex scene in this movie. It was scary, honest and raw. But people could find my body very unattractive. There could be a backlash against it”.

The best thing about modern living is anaesthesia. Definitely.

Clearly romantic comedy is my franchise genre, I don’t mind saying that, it’s true. I love doing them and hopefully always will do them. I don’t feel particularly typecast because I think I do so many different kinds of things. Whether they’re seen or not is another issue.

Alan J. Pakula (1928–1998)

Born: April 7, 1928 in The Bronx, New York City, New York, USA
Died: November 19, 1998 (age 70) in Melville, Long Island, New York, USA

He was killed when a metal pipe smashed through the windshield of his black Volvo station wagon and struck him in the head. The seven-foot-long pipe was already in the roadway when another car gave it a glancing blow, sending it through Pakula’s windshield. Then Pakula’s car swerved across a service road and hit a fence. The accident happened about a quarter mile east of the Melville exit on the Long Island Expressway. He was taken to North Shore University Hospital at Plainview (Nassau County), where he was pronounced dead at 12:22 P.M.

[on continuing to perform after a recent bout of cancer, 2014] I think the reason that God brought me back out here is because I want to prove to these people out there that soul music is not dead. Soul music did not end in ’69. It’s still here today, and we don’t want it to end.

[on feminism] It’s standing shoulder to shoulder with my sisters on the truth of who we are, which is a force to be reckoned with. My own personal philosophy means showing rather than telling. And, as Steve Martin put it, being so good that they can’t ignore us.

[on The Birth of a Nation (2016)] I don’t want this to be a film. I want it to be a movement. I don’t want it to be a moment in time. I want a launch pad for conversation around how we can deal with our trauma collectively. Then we can create a cultural shift. [2016]

Peta Wilson

Born: November 18, 1970 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

With her distinctive voice, ultra-intense eyes and statuesque frame, Peta Wilson probably could have carried her breakout television show, “La Femme Nikita,” on looks alone. Such was television in 1997. But when viewers realized that this killer- with-a-killer body could actually act, the show became the highest-rated drama on cable. Indeed “La Femme Nikita” was yet more proof that an inexpensively produced series could bypass the traditional TV networks and still make lots of money if it had something special to offer. In this case, Peta Wilson was that “something special.” Producer Joel Surnow, who later went on to produce “24,” said watching Peta Wilson as “Nikita” was “like watching lightning in a jar.” She beat out 200 actors for the role patterned after the female assassin “Nikita”.

Elizabeth Perkins

Born: November 18, 1960 in Queens, New York City, New York, USA

You don’t necessarily always want to be with someone who works in your business. It takes a certain kind of couple that are both actors to be able to make it, and it takes a certain kind of ego and lack of competition and ability to really sustain a relationship while you’re spending a lot of time apart. I’m with a cinematographer. He’s very stable, and I’m highly neurotic – so it works.
