I think that the past fifteen years–where women have gone to work and left the men–the baby boomers who are now in Hollywood and control a lot of the money are upset that the wives have gone or mommies gone off to work. There are all these scripts where the women, if they’re working, are prostitutes and lawyers with an angry streak who’ll kill you. It’s a reaction to women leaving their men and men being angry about it and saying it on some subconscious level.

[about watching the black-and-white “loops” made in the 1940s and 1950s by Bettie Page in order to understand her character in The Notorious Bettie Page (2005)] I love the loops! I couldn’t take my eyes off of them. It was five minutes dedicated to the art of the shoe, and putting the shoe on–but first the stocking. It was so geisha. There was something so presentational. Bettie was just lost in her own world, dancing around with this fringe bikini on, with this weird lamp on the side table.

Alfre Woodard

Born: November 8, 1952 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA

I come from a FULL house of storytellers. If they wanted to simply tell you about someone pouring the tea, it would take about ten minutes. They would act out all the parts. I had to kind of jump in there because, as the youngest, if I wanted to get in an opinion, I had to yell and jump and really participate. In addition to participating, I was also observing. I think an actor really has to be an observant person. Not necessarily remembering facts, not observing THAT way.

I think the reason I never ended up in as much trouble as Paris or Lindsay seem to is that I’m not stupid, so I’d never do a lot of the things those girls do, and I’ve always had good friends around me. They need to straighten up a little bit and make better investments. And they should surround themselves with better people who don’t let them get themselves in trouble. You’ll never read a story about me going out and partying when I’m supposed to be working. Nor would I show up on a set drunk or miss a day’s work – never.

Jessica Lowndes

Born: November 8, 1988 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

I live a healthy lifestyle and I crave healthy food. I love porridge – I have bizarre cravings for it. I love it with brown sugar and bananas, and I’m a huge fan of cinnamon – I put cinnamon on everything. I also have a sweet tooth and I don’t like to deprive myself. I think everything in moderation is the key.

A lot of women are in a crazy exercise cycle; they’re so afraid they’ll gain weight if they stop, and it’s especially hard when they get pregnant. What they need to realize is that if you’re not exercising so much, you don’t have to eat so much, and your body adjusts. It sounds so simple, but you really do have to listen to your body.

If it’s not working before you get married, marriage isn’t going to fix it.

I understand that it would be smart, career-wise, to line up something, but it wouldn’t be smart for my personal life or my sanity. Some people thrive when they’re working. I thrive when I’m hanging out with my friends…

Matthew Rhys

Born: November 8, 1974 in Cardiff, Wales, UK

[on his on- and off-screen chemistry with Sally Field, who plays Nora Walker]: One time she was in the kitchen and she likes to sort of prepare things in the scene, I wasn’t really paying attention, and she’s chopping away … and she just presents this huge bowl of guacamole! That’s a testament to Sally Field because I’m concentrating on just about getting by and remembering my lines – she’s doing that and preparing guacamole for the rest of the cast!

Michael Nyqvist

Born: November 8, 1960 in Stockholm, Stockholms län, Sweden

What Stieg Larsson was up to – it was the Swedish guilt over World War II. All of our neighbors had the most terrible experiences with the bad forces, but Sweden didn’t. I think we use the thrillers in a different way. We never write a thriller like ‘Who is the murderer?’ The big question in most of our thrillers is… ‘Why?’
