Died Today (October 25th): Richard Harris (1930–2002)

Born: October 1, 1930 in Limerick, Ireland
Died: October 25, 2002 (age 72) in Bloomsbury, London, England, UK

I came to England first in 1954 looking for a bedsit, a room to sleep in while going to my academy. And outside the Earl’s Court tube station there was a little tobacco-list and paper shop and they had a board. A glass-filled in board with rooms for rent. And I saw one for thirteen shillings a week and it said, “No Irishmen or black need apply” and I took my jersey and I put it down over my hand and I put my hand right through the glass and I took it out and I kept it for the rest of my life. That’s how we were treated here in 1954. That would cause me grievance. That would cause me anger.

Happy Birthday: Martin Campbell

I like pre-production and post the best. I don’t like shooting at all. I find it grueling and tough, but I love post and the whole process of seeing the film finally come together. You start ironing out all the rough spots, and the really bad bits you just throw away. So from day one of post to the last day, you see nothing but improvements.

[on Daniel Craig] He’s a young Steve McQueen and I wanted to show that. As a first-time director I wanted to make sure I hired people who were good actors. That was really important, to make my life easier. Daniel is so on the cusp of becoming a big star, and I hope this is the catalyst.

[on Rihanna] I don’t even know if I wrote a rap song in that whole nine months, because I wasn’t a rapper anymore. I didn’t believe in myself. I was someone else’s property. I was a pawn. You know what she was doing to me? She was doing exactly what I’ve done to so many women throughout my life, which is show them quality time, then disappear. I was like, ‘wow, this feels terrible.’

Being on Twitter and social media, you obviously get to see a lot more of what people are thinking of you and of your show.

I started on Neighbours (1985) when I was 14. It’s crazy to think now that I had such a bizarre adolescence.

Happy Birthday: Katie McGrath

[on her quick success as an actress]: It was a bit cheeky, granted. What happened was that I obviously knew all the [The Tudors (2007)] crew well, and one of the drivers gave me a confidential cast list with all the actors’ agents’ details on it, and I wrote to them. I got picked up from that, and Merlin (2008) came along just a few months later. So I won the lottery! I do feel quite bad when everyone talks about how difficult it is to get a foothold in this [acting] business. Most actors slog for years. For instance, everyone on Merlin (2008) did four years at drama school, but I just lucked out.

It’s not an understatement to say that I owe everything as an actor to Merlin (2008). It was pretty much my first job, and I didn’t know what I was doing for many years on it. It wasn’t until the third and fourth series – the fourth series especially – that I really found my feet with the character, and as an actress.

We must question the story logic of having an all-knowing, all-powerful God, who creates faulty humans, and then blames them for his own mistakes.

The strength of a civilization is not measured by its ability to fight wars, but rather by its ability to prevent them.

These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five year mission… to boldly go where no man has gone before.

[on his first meeting with Leonard Nimoy] If I ever do a science-fiction show, I’m going to put pointed ears on him and use him.
