[on her 31 (2016) character]: Charly is totally a victim in this movie and she’s only doing everything out of the instinct to survive, like Heidi in The Lords of Salem (2012). I think it shows that everyone has that in them and they can come out. It’s kill or be killed.

Died Today (September 25th): Andy Williams (1927–2012)

Born: December 3, 1927 in Wall Lake, Iowa, USA
Died: September 25, 2012 (age 84) in Branson, Missouri, USA

[Williams, an ultra-conservative Republican, replying to a question about US President Barack Obama] Don’t like him at all. I think he wants to create a socialist country. The people he associates with are very left-wing. One is registered as a Communist [a rumor at the time that turned out be false]. Obama is following Marxist theory. He’s taken over the banks and the car industry. He wants the country to fail.

[on his support of ex-wife Claudine Longet after she shot to death her lover, skier Spider Sabich, in 1976] I had to be there for her. She is the mother of my children. And we never stopped being friends. I still accept her story that the shooting was accidental. Bing Crosby’s wife once told me that she was amazed that I had taken so much trouble to help Claudine after we divorced. I said that anybody would have done the same thing, and she said, “Bing wouldn’t.” I think she meant that Bing was a very rigid guy, and once you had screwed up, you were off his list. Well, that’s not the kind of guy I am.

I was called to [Louis B. Mayer]’s office to discuss a long-term contract he wanted me to sign. He told me he had been impressed by my work at other studios and that he felt I would be an asset to MGM. He peered at me over his glasses and suggested I tell him about myself. I started by saying I came from New Brunswick. “That’s in Canada”, I added. “I know where New Brunswick is”, said Mayer rather snippy. “Where in New Brunswick were you born?” “Saint John”, I replied. Mayer jumped to his feet and thumped on his desk. “Young man”, he shouted, “you can’t influence me with lies like that. Who told you to say you came from Saint John?” Finally I quietened him down and convinced him I really was from Saint John. I had to tell him where half-a-dozen streets and buildings were that he remembered. But I left his office with a contract for much more money than I expected and we were friends until the day he died.

[on the ‘Game of Thrones’ series] Wiser network heads might have said ‘You can’t kill Sean Bean nine episodes into your show’. Guess what? The lead dies. That’s why HBO is HBO. They break all the rules.

While working on Game of Thrones, he and co-creator D. B. Weiss worked all through the year, non stop. They would write an outline for each season and then started writing the actual scripts while managing production at the same time. The scripts had to be all done by the time they started filming the season, and as the large production it is they were filming for months with several units in several countries at the same time, while they did re-writings of parts of the scripts and made perfections. They also made sure there’s always a man from the writing crew at one of the filming units, to supervise. Almost immediately after finishing filming, they started writing the outline for the next season. At the same time, the previous season was in post production phases like editing and sound mixing, and they had to oversee all these procedures while writing, and later deal with marketing of the upcoming season as well. David and Dan would occasionally say in interviews that all they want to do once they finish with the show is to “get some sleep”.

When I told everybody I was doing Hercules (1997), they felt really sorry for me. They thought I was so down on my luck that I was having to do extra work on the TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1995).

[2016 interview] Reality always filters through into my films, even when I try to reject it. It finds a crack to seep in through. The climate of the last four years in Spain has been of enormous unhappiness and even though I haven’t personally suffered from the harshness of the economic situation, I’m surrounded by people who have. I don’t think Julieta (2016) is a metaphor for Spain today but it’s no accident that my 80s films were much happier.

[About Little Witches (1996)] “How did you know about ‘Little Witches’?? You’ve seen it? So you’ve seen my ass! Oh my God, I can’t believe this. I did that movie when I was 18. ‘Little Witches’ doesn’t count. It was my first movie and I had no clue what I was doing, I mean, my God, I worked in a coffee house while that film was being shot”.
