The topic of leadership is a touchy one. A lot of leaders fail because they don’t have the bravery to touch that nerve or strike that chord. Throughout my years, I haven’t had that fear.

The presence of her belly-button on I Dream of Jeannie (1965) was a non-issue until its existence was questioned, playfully, by columnist Mike Connolly. When Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In (1967) producer George Schlatter decided to premiere it on his show, NBC issued a “No Navel Edict”.

I would just look at Harrison [Harrison Ford]; he would do stuff and I would not mimic it, but interpret it younger. Mimicking is a terrible mistake that many people make when they play someone younger, or with an age difference. Mimicking doesn’t interpret true because you can’t just edit it around. [on his interpretation of a young Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)]

Network television is all talk. I think there should be visuals on a show, some sense of mystery to it, connections that don’t add up. I think there should be dreams and music and dead air and stuff that goes nowhere. There should be, God forgive me, a little bit of poetry.
I felt I was out of step with everything. I remember seeing Pretty Woman (1990) on an airplane. Everybody was laughing their heads off. “Ho-ho-ho!” It wasn’t funny to me, it wasn’t dramatic–it wasn’t anything. I thought, “Why don’t I just open the door and jump out?”
It wasn’t something I was really dying to hear, because my response in my head was: I don’t give a fuck – I hate television. But I wasn’t used to being talked to that way. – on his reaction to Brad Grey’s desire to sign him to a television deal.

You know, I used to think I was a foodie, and then my wife went to culinary school and basically explained to me that I was just a guy that likes to eat.
My wife handles all of our technology. So if something goes wrong with the computer, I throw up my arms and step aside while the IT gal figures it out.

[on performing with Dolly Parton] Working with Dolly is a great rush for me because we are good friends, and we have been, forever. We just flirted a lot. I can’t explain it, but flirting is more electric than passion. It’s the anticipation. She does it better than anybody I’ve ever seen, and it’s just good fun.

(Referring to the restroom murder scene in Witness (1985): It was the most violent scene I’ve ever filmed. I still wonder if it was too violent, but I did want to have an outrage over the violence that occured in front of those innocent eyes [of the Amish boy character].
