Happy Birthday: Mae West (1893–1980)

maewest.jpgMae West (1893–1980)

Born: August 17, 1893 in Woodhaven, Queens, New York City, New York, USA
Died: November 22, 1980 (age 87) in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA

It’s better to be looked over than overlooked.

A hard man is good to find.

Men are my life, diamonds are my career!

When women go wrong, men go right after them!

When caught between two evils I generally pick the one I’ve never tried before.

When I’m good, I’m very good. But when I’m bad, I’m better.

Marriage is a great institution. I’m not ready for an institution.

It’s not the man in your life that counts. It’s the life in your man.

Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?

When you make your first film, there is a hell of a lot to think about, and you’ve got to have a gut understanding of your material. It’s not enough to say, ‘I’ve met people like this.’ You’ve got to know them inside out. So with Separate Lies I placed my characters in a class that I understand, but it doesn’t mean that this is a film about class. It’s about being trapped, about the consequences of our choices, and about lying.

First acting experience – so that was just, incredible, I never thought that I’d get it, I really didn’t. I still can’t believe it – you know, it just seems so weird, and seeing it up on the big screen. I kind of disassociate the finished product to when we were actually filming because the two seem so different.

[following the Boston Marathon bombings] In the past few months I’ve discovered something different about Boston. Everyone can celebrate in times of glory, but when something horrific happens, when something unspeakable happens, that’s not when cities come together, that’s when families come together. And I think we’ve shown the world that we are just not one of the greatest cities on earth, we are one of the greatest families on the face of this Earth.

Madonna (16 August 1985 – 14 September 1989) (divorced)

[on his marriage to Madonna] She was in the process of becoming the biggest star in the world. I just wanted to make my films and hide. I was an angry young man. I had a lot of demons and don’t really know who could’ve lived with me at the time. I was just as badly behaved as her, so I can’t point the finger of blame.

[on playing the strong-willed, feisty Violet in American Horror Story (2011)] The horror aspect, the scary parts, are easy for me. I mean I can get into that pretty easy, because I get scared. You have to invest yourself in these characters.

Theatre is liberating because it only works if it’s truthful, That’s what it requires. That’s not true of film: the camera does lie. You can be moved by a performance on set, but when you see it on screen, it does nothing. Yet there will be someone you simply didn’t notice on set that on screen: bam!
