But as a teenager, I had the opportunity to audition for this television series: a daytime soap opera. And I got the lead part. I had just finished ninth grade in school, so I skipped what we called gymnasium and started working instead. And realized that this is a life I can see myself living.

I always thought that once a film is finished (or abandoned, as someone said once…), it no longer belongs to the filmmakers – it belongs to the audience. [on his most famous role and film, Dr. No (1962)] I had no idea what I was letting myself in for. I had no idea it would achieve the success it did. I know nothing about mysteries. I don’t take to them. As far as I was concerned, I thought it might be just another Grade-B Charlie Chan mystery.

I’ve had parallel careers in the theatre and in movies. In the theatre, I often play characters with a strong sense of innocence who aren’t as intelligent as I am. The reason: my size. I seem sort of big and good-natured on stage. It would be too much for a big man to play a forbidding character on stage. So I play big people who are fairly gentle. It’s a wonderful thing to build a career on. What I offer to movie-makers is that I can put a tremendous amount of theatrical background and technical equipment at their disposal. I can make believable the over-the-top characters.

(on briefly working in banking): I gave two weeks’ notice a week before Black Monday. But it was very strange because I thought I would be working on Wall Street my whole life. It was the go-go ’80s; there were yellow ties. It was just an exciting moment. And although I wasn’t involved in the trading side of things, I was still around that culture, and I ultimately decided it just wasn’t for me. As a matter of fact, I wanted to be a New York City firefighter. I didn’t make it in, though.

I did a lot of trapeze stuff when I did ‘Pippin’ and continued to do it afterward. Flying is so fun, and I was used to the harness idea, but these harnesses are like intense, full bodysuit things.
I’ve never really had a fear of heights; in fact, I love being up high, so hanging from wires high above everyone’s head has always sort of felt natural for me.
I wasn’t instructed to do any special training for ‘Hawkgirl,’ but I had started boxing a few weeks prior and stuck with that for several months leading up to the start of production.

[on when she heard about the job in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)] I was on a camel! In the desert. In Ouarzazat [Morocco]. Filming The Red Tent (2014) for Lifetime. I had just popped over to London to meet Tom Cruise to see if the chemistry worked and 12 hours later I’m back on the camel, wrapping up production and I got a phone call. They say: ‘You’ve got the next lead!’ So I’ll be back in Ouarzazat but on a motorbike! And there I was a month later.
