The film CRYING BABY, DANCING BEE is an animated short that feels like it came from a storybook. The narrative follows a Queen Bee that is part human and part bee that explores the world when she comes off her mountain top. The story begins like it is an old folk tale that was passed down from generation to generation, except the audience knows it wasn’t since the Queen Bee has a smartphone and Bitcoin.
The animation style gives into the feeling of nostalgia, as very few films are hand-drawn like this one. This makes the film even more appealing as it incorporates new ideas with the traditional method of animating films. The music that accompanies the story is folksy and slightly tecktonic, which helps the audience to root for the Queen Bee as she rises to fame.
The humanistic Queen Bee is already known around the world, as the narrator explains at the beginning of the film. She rises to fame through TikTok, which would introduce even more people to her, as she explores the world and dances on the social media platform. This bee seems to be trying to find her place in the world as peaks in windows to watch a crying baby or what other bees do. She is not fully human, but seems to be motherly as she appears to long for a baby herself. She is also not fully a bee, so she watches them and wants a place to belong.
This animated short shows how easy it is to begin posting on social media in the hope of finding a place to belong. The tone is light and the story ends with the audience wanting more content from the Queen Bee.
