The film CRYING BABY, DANCING BEE is an animated short that feels like it came from a storybook. The narrative follows a Queen Bee that is part human and part bee and explores her world when she comes off Table Mountain. The story begins like it is an old folk tale that was passed down from generation to generation, except the audience knows it wasn’t since the Queen Bee has a smartphone and a Bitcoin.
The animation style gives into the feeling of nostalgia, rarely are films are hand-drawn like this one. This makes the film even more appealing as it incorporates new ideas with the traditional method of animating films. The music that accompanies the story is folksy and slightly tecktonic, which helps the audience to root for the Queen Bee as she rises to find the source of her good fortune.
The humanistic Queen Bee travels around the world, as the narrator explains at the beginning of the film. This slice of life, indie animated short poses the question WHY is the Baby Crying and WHY is the Bee Dancing. Her journey home is interrupted by the cry of a baby. She remembers her former role as Queen Bee, a big birther of babies and how it was destroyed by the Mad Cow. She feels sad.
This animated short shows how hard the human struggle is from the mouth of a baby to the shores of South Africa, but how the use of BITCOIN has given this bee and this nation hope. The story ends with Buzzbee dancing on a bitcoin and celebrating her miners. Clearly the Queen Bee finds joy in the ordinary. She appreciates simple pleasures and everyday beauty.
The tone is light and the story ends with the audience wanting more content from the Queen Bee.
