Documentary and Comedy generally do not mix – especially in a film festival screening. This month was a experimentation in programming. We began the festival with three excellent documentary short films that have gotten into every festival they have submitted to. And we ended on three comedy shorts that were polarizing to all.

The theme of the Documentary/Comedy Festival was “Overcoming external conflicts”.

Fred was a funny kid, and I got a lot of humor from him. For a while, we were in a Catholic school up in Milwaukee, and Fred used to get laughs pulling an electric iron around the floor, like dragging a dog on a leash. Every day he had a new thing going with the iron. Fred was a great ball player too. He tried out with the Chicago White Sox, but that was years before Jackie Robinson made the break, and he was too early.

(On The Green Mile) I think I was the second person cast in it, though I don’t know who the first person was. Frank Darabont, I had worked with a little in HBO’s Two-Fisted Tales series, before he directed The Shawshank Redemption. He called me up and said he was going to send a script, and the only thing he was worried about was that I would want to improvise, so I was quick to assure him that I didn’t want to improvise. I didn’t want to change his lines. You basically have to tell the director whatever they want to hear when you’re looking to get a job. That script was a script that everyone who read wanted to be a part of. Everybody who read it wept; it was just wonderfully moving.

[on the reshoots of Superman II (1980) after changing directors] It was usually done whenever a set doubled or we had a problem with expensive actors being available. I remember we did many scenes from the Daily Planet, if not all of them, while we were doing Part One. So those were pretty much in the bank. Gene Hackman, to the extent that he was in Part Two, was also done while he was around for Part One. I don’t remember that he came back again.
